as a born-and-bred philadelphian who just moved back after a decade in brooklyn i’m excited. looking forward to learning more about the amazing architecture in my new west philly neighborhood.
i still miss my old clinton hill stomping grounds and still come to brownstoner almost daily to check in on the old neighborhoods.
i hope you do the restaurant feature for philly too!
congrats to the brownstoner crew, i hope the new blog flourishes.
“call the Philly site “Rowhouser, a brownstoner(tm) site.”
I’m with Heather, I think that would work much better. And I would definitely not mention the “sixth borough” thing on the new site. One of the things that I really love about Philly is that it’s not filled with New Yorkers, and I’m guessing that other people from Philly probably feel the same way.
That said, I am forwarding the sign-up site to everyone I know in Philly.
Guys, MM isn’t going anywhere (we hope!). She’s going to keep doing what she’s great at, which is writing long-form posts about Brooklyn architecture and history. Let’s please not twist this into a rejection of MM.
“At the same, and in the wake of this announcement I can’t help feeling a bit like Kanye on Taylor Swift.”
ROFL! I hope I didn’t come off as Kanye in my post about hiring MM! I do congratulate you Jill, and I’mll let you do your thing, but MM had an awesome week here while controlling the reigns of Brownstoner 🙂 (too much?)
Congrats to you Jon B for seeing this expansion of your enterprise. It really has been fascinating watching where you have taken this business since its inception up to now. I truly admire and respect your entreprenuerial spirit. And, having said all that, I also have to join the small chorus that wishes you had named MM as your Brooklyn-Based editor. This is definitely not a diss on Jill! Don’t even know the woman yet and now that she’s been named, she deserves a chance to strut her stuff. At the same, and in the wake of this announcement I can’t help feeling a bit like Kanye on Taylor Swift. Hopefully, with a bit more decorum than him, you can hear me say that MM is a gem of a communicator (and principled moderator) who brings to Brownstoner something very different and refreshing than the same old, same old real estate development, price wars stuff. She deserves some editorial props!
On the anti-NYC sentiment, I’d only add that it’s not limited to Philly. Lots of other big American cities have that special non-appreciation for the Big Apple (Chicago, in particular comes to mind). Heard some commentator mention it just the other day. The condition was referred to as the “second city syndrome.” Sounds about right. 🙂
also, we bought from jan bye at urbanbye. great woman, kinda like having a mom for a realtor.
no lawyers at closing in philly either! most stressless real estate transaction ever.
nice!

That makes the most sense. To me anyway.
Jersey City has ALWAYS Been considered the official 6th borough.
