This listing for 104 Prospect Park West calls the house “among the most special ever offered in Brooklyn,” and as grandiose as that claim sounds it may not be all that hyperbolic. It’s a real stunner, this one.

A rare set of ingredients are at work here. First, a jaw-dropping Gilded Age limestone mansion designed by Axel Hedman in 1899; next, a family that held on to it and cared for it for an entire century. Last, a recent top-end architectural renovation that restored the wondrous original details to showroom polish while modernizing the house with upgrades that blend beautifully with its historic character.

That renovation, undertaken by Elizabeth Roberts, known for blending historic restoration with a clean and modern aesthetic, got an Insider writeup just a few months ago.

A single-family spread over five floors, the house is as vast as it is gorgeous. At 20 feet wide, it’s a whopping 90 feet deep on the parlor and garden floors; the upper floors reach 60 feet. In addition to some 3,000 square feet of living space that’s awash in carved wood, mantels, mirrors, wainscoting, plaster detailing and stained glass, it’s got five bedrooms on the top three floors.

That includes a full-floor master suite with a dressing room bigger than many bedrooms, a treetop-level view of Prospect Park, a rear deck and a lovely en suite bathroom with a pair of original marble sinks and a custom walnut vanity (pictured in the Insider piece).

The kitchen is a looker as well, awash in natural light and sporting marble counters and a marble floor, custom cabinetry, a six-burner Blue Star range, a double-wide SubZero fridge and a dumbwaiter that goes up to the formal dining room above.

Upgrades include a five-zone air conditioning and humidification system, radiant heat in the bathrooms and garden floor, a new roof, new double-paned windows, a security system with remote access, and high-efficiency heat and hot water systems.

Last but not least, the backyard holds Brooklyn’s oldest ginkgo tree, according to the listing.

Listed by Alexander Maroni of Douglas Elliman, the house carries a price tag as head-turning as its details: $11 million. Even given the scope of the renovation, that’s a staggering boost from the $3.7 million it sold for in 2012 (when we featured it as a House of the Day).

This one will be interesting to watch. What do you think of the asking price and the renovation?
