Tybur, Snappy, points well taken. It pisses me off no end that we are not idolizing black men in non-sports/entertainment professions, those that a majority of black youth of any economic group could aspire to be, with the right discipline and encouragement.
It’s especially annoying how advertising plays right into this as well. Not the blatent shilling by sports figures, but the crowd scenes in everything from soda to sportscars to kids’ drinks, where the black guy is always a sports figure, or is always dancing, while everyone else is engaged in a myriad of other occupations. Take a recent commercial, I think for either a phone company or computer or even a bank, I don’t remember: it showed all kinds of people following their dreams, fashion design, baker, scientist. But the one black person in the commercial wants to be a krunk dancer. There is nothing wrong with being a krunk dancer, but can’t they show us aspiring to be something different, like a scientist, an architect, a math teacher?
