That philosophy is ever present at the The Noguchi Museum, a beloved museum and store in Long Island City. Located on the corner of Vernon Boulevard and 33rd Road, it features sculpture pieces and well-crafted home furnishings by Isamu Noguchi along with a creative, inspired collection of room accessories and wall hangings.

The Noguchi Museum always has an exhibition of Noguchi sculpture art and photography to explore. We’ve particularly enjoyed the current exhibition, “Hammer, Chisel, Drill.”

The Noguchi Museum is very active in the LIC, Queens community, hosting events and educational programs throughout the year for the public to enjoy.

During the summer months and other times throughout the year, the Noguchi Museum invites patrons to enjoy extended hours every first Friday of the month. Noguchi Museum First Fridays is a program that lets Long Island City locals mingle among the works of the famed artist. The program was a big hit with LIC Noguchi Museum visitors in 2012 so much so that nearby TF Cornerstone has joined in by treating its East Coast LIC waterfront residents to shuttle transportation to this months’ event.

Noguchi Museum hours are extended for First Fridays, running from 5pm to 8pm. Admission is pay-what-you-wish and a cash bar of wine and beer is available for attendees. The evening begins with a social mingling hour, and continues with the “Center of Attention” hour, which is an extended conversation around a single Noguchi sculpture or other work of art. During the remainder of the time, an Art21 episode is performed featuring contemporary artists.

This Friday is indeed the First Friday in February and the winter lineup for Noguchi Museum First Fridays includes the Art21 episode “Balance” in which featured artists’ works explore the distinction between balance and imbalance.

February is a shorter month, so First Friday in March will come before you know it. Make plans now to be there for the Art21 episode “Time” in which artists Vija Celmins, Tim Hawkinson, Paul Pfeiffer, and Martin Puryea. The episode will explore the interactions between time and art.

Be sure to check out the Noguchi Museum website for the full details on their ongoing programs and exhibitions. The current exhibition runs through April, however, the site is kept quite up-to-date so watch for the programs that will catch your eye. Spending time at the Noguchi Museum is always a rich experience and one not to be missed in Long Island City!
