What actually divides Queens and Brooklyn? There’s no great wall or border patrol to mark the line between Brooklyn and Queens. The Queens-Brooklyn border issue has been confounding the two boroughs, especially residents of Ridgewood and Bushwick, for hundreds of years.

Back in the day, street signs were color coded per borough, so all you had to do was look up. If the sign was blue, you were in Queens and if it was black and white, Brooklyn. Especially useful for those post-bar late night taxi rides. This was phased out in the 1980s when the city ruled all signs must be in reflective white lettering.


All along the East River, in Brooklyn and in Queens, shiny new high-rise apartment buildings are going up. These towers boast deluxe amenities and stunning views. Those New Yorkers with limited incomes would be forgiven for thinking that an apartment in one of these buildings would be out of their reach. However, thanks to various government initiatives, many of these buildings are mixed-income developments that offer affordable housing options.

Hunter’s Point South Commons and Hunter’s Point South Crossing are the first two mixed-income residential buildings at Hunter’s Point South in Long Island City. All 925 units are moderately priced rent stabilized apartments. They are offering studio apartments for as low as $494 a month, 1-bedrooms for $689, 2-bedrooms for $835, and 3-bedrooms for $959. As you can imagine, the demand for these apartments is high, and qualified applicants should apply to be entered into the lottery.

All the big names in the art world were gathered in a converted warehouse on 9th Street between 43rd and 44th Avenues in LIC last night when a fire in the tented rear yard facing 10th Street threatened to end the evening before the first plate of gravlax appetizer had been served. Not to fear: New York’s bravest were on the scene in a matter of minutes and quickly put out the malfunctioning generator that had created the alarming billows of smoke on the roof where the likes of Matthew Barney and Chuck Close had been enjoying scenic views of the setting sun behind the Manhattan skyline. No one was hurt, but diners at the Foundation for Contemporary Arts gala did have to go without heat. Their moods were warmed, however, by the news that each would be leaving the party with his or her own limited edition Jasper Johns print made especially for the occasion.

A couple of the Queens newspapers — Queens Courier and Queens Chronicle — have reported this week on the planned cleanup of a toxic material left behind from the previous industrial usage of an area that is home to eight storage bays situated beneath the former Ozone Park LIRR station. At a community board meeting exchanges between residents and CB9 officials, it seems, got kinda heated when residents expressed numerous safety concerns that — based on the reporting we read — will likely cause the projects planners to go back to the drawing board.

In addition to being the subject of this toxic cleanup story, the Ozone Park LIRR station has been in the news for its part in the proposed Queensway, an elevated park built upon decommissioned railroad tracks. The linear park’s route would run directly above the contaminated area in question.
