Here’s a story that will make some married renters take heart. Chana and Simon Taub built their Borough Park dream house in 1985: a five-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath, two-garage brick job with a mahogany spiral staircase and green marble walls. When the marriage fell apart, though, they could not agree on who should lay claim to their creation. So they’re sharing it. Sort of. They’ve essentially divided it in half, courtesy of some plywood planks, and now they spend their days duking out the details in and out of court. “The house that had been the Taubs’ showpiece became a front in their domestic war, one involving more than a dozen attorneys and allegations of abuse, corruption, libel, perjury, fraud and forgery,” reports the NY Times’ Key magazine. “In the three years since Chana Taub filed for divorce, the couple has spent more money in litigation over the house than the house itself is worth.” The suffering they endure is both emotional and physical; Simon controls the A/C switch, and “now the only way for Chana to get to her car from inside the house is to crouch down and shuffle under the staircase.” For her part, Chana still sleeps in the bed Simon has demanded back in the divorce.

  1. This story pretty much disgusts me. These people are supposed to be so pious and devout and have no outside interests other than religion and their family, and yet they have let greed and the desire to win get in the way of anything else. Oh, and BTW, the house isn’t even that great.

  2. This has been going on for years. It started before the actual filing for the divorce. This fight has split the community into Team Chana and Team Simon. What’s worse is that it has also divided their children into two factions.

  3. Sounds like one of the few times the woman doesn’t rake the guy over the coals in a divorce.

Do Orthodox Jews truly have sex through a bedsheet or is that just a myth? Better that than plywood, though.

  4. I find it amazing that people who leading such “devoutly religious” lives can behave in this manner. Spite, vengeance, cruelty, so this is what god has taught these two?

I feel no sympathy for either of them.

If either had a lick of sense they’d have walked away with their respective piles of money/property and said good riddance. Now they get to leave with ulcers and lawyers bills. What a sense satisfaction they’ll have!
