Rental of the Day: 395 Smith Street
This four-bedroom duplex rental at 395 Smith Street is an interesting one. On one hand, it’s only $3,995 a month for a Carroll Gardens address that’s just a block away from places like Frankies, Prime Meats, and Buttermilk Channel. But on the other hand, the apartment is on that lower stretch of Smith Street, right…

But on the other hand, the apartment is on that lower stretch of Smith Street, right next to the train, and some of the bedrooms lack proper walls, which ain’t good. What’s your feeling?

ok this building is literally directly across the street from where the F/G train emerges from the tunnel. And forget about those uptown trains breaking hard into Carroll Street Station!

NEXTTTTTTT!
Someone I know who grew up in Carroll Gardens calls that block the place “where the crackheads hang out”.
He tends to exaggerate, but I’m sure back in the Bad ol’ days…
The tyranny of gut renovations. Le Sigh.
What is up with this building??? Around 2006 I was on the market for a 2bdrm, and an agent took me to see a place in this building. It was the apt right behind that door on the right at street-level. I thought someone was playing a joke; you walked in through the door, and were standing with about 2 square feet of clear space. To the left was a small tv on a stand against the wall, to the right was a single chair against that wall. Obviously for watching the tv, but that was the “living room”.
Directly in front of you as you stood in the “living room” was the staircase which took you down to the main level of the apt. At the bottom of the stairs you were in the dining room, which had doorways leading off it to the tiny gally kitchen, bathroom and 2 bedrooms. None of which had any windows, since the whole level was below ground. Oh, 1 of the bedrooms had a window-sized patch of thick glass blocks in the ceiling (like what you see on sidewalks to let light into basements. Some light was coming through a bit, but that was the only “natural” light in the whole place.
From the posting above, I can tell the same person decorated probably all the apartments (those mirrors!). I noticed in the apt I viewed there was a mysterious wall in the dining room space which was nothing but a huge mirror with a wooden frame encasing it. The odd part was one side of the frame had hinges running along it so it appeared the mirror-wall could be opened whenever someone wanted to. I had no idea what was on the other side though, and that was just one more thing on the list of our reasons not to take the place!
Who owns this place and what is up with the layouts?!
IrieMan – yes, it is that guy.
This must be the Jerk that litters Smith STreet with obnoxious “rent my condo” signs…guess he hasn’t hear of the internet.
