Rental of the Day: 77 St. Marks Avenue
We’re not sure we can even call this rental at 77 St. Marks Avenue a studio since there’s a shared bathroom and only a kitchenette. (Property Shark has the building classified as a rooming house.) And because the listing doesn’t give square footage, we don’t even want to think about how small it might be….

And because the listing doesn’t give square footage, we don’t even want to think about how small it might be. But, hey, it’s in a brownstone on St. Mark’s Avenue right off Flatbush, it’s full of details with some personality, and the rent is in the triple digits: 900 bucks a month. Obviously this is going to appeal to a certain type of renter who doesn’t mind sacrificing space (or their own bathroom) for a prime Prospect Heights location on the cheap. Think it could be worth it?

I think sharing a Bathroom with strangers is ridiculous and disgusting- It should be illegal and I feel bad for anyone who gets duped into thinking that paying 900 a month for that is a great deal. Donatella is soo0o right on this- It’s worth the extra commute time to live in Staten Island for cheaper. You can spend the 200 you save from rent on the express bus and live in a nice safe suburban area.
for what it’s worth, the old gents who hang out by the stoop at this place seem nice enough.
I agree with donatella.
You can also get a studio in Kensington, Ditmas Park or Astoria for $900.
Get a studio in Staten Island. 700 dollars. No human being should live in a shit hole like this and pay 900 dollars.
Ah yes, I used to call that the “Sanford and Son” house when I lived nearby. They’ve cleared out most of the accumulated junk that used to fill the front yard since then, I assume back when they were trying to sell the place.
Interesting.
Very old-school.
I didn’t know such places still exist in Prospect Heights.
Seems over-priced to me.
This is an unreconstructed SRO from the old days. One of the guys who lives here — a sweet older man from the neighborhood-fixture, eyes-on-the-street school — told me last year that the house was on the market. I guess they got no takers. Doubtless several of the tenants are rent controlled. In the current market that must make a property like this pretty much unsaleable — not that I begrudge those tenants their modest homes!
I went to see this place with a friend. The person who was suppose to let us in never showed up and we waited for 30 mins calling the number we used from the ad.Still no returned calls or explanation.
The outside of that place looks like it has been abandoned. Th placed is weathered on the outside to the point that the two front doors don’t meet the door frame any more.As in eaten away. There are old bikes and what not chained to the broken down rod-iron fence. Some of it looks like it belongs to a bag lady or someone who collects recyclables. No door bell so we wore our knuckles out knocking on the glass paned front door.
Location is great but pales in the shadow of the well kept Brownstone right next door or those down the street.I’ve noticed a lot of these hostel type living situations popping up around Brooklyn.
