Rental of the Day: 52 Clark Street
This studio in Brooklyn Heights’ 52 Clark Street looks like it’s in decent shape, and it has a separate kitchen. Question is: Would you pay $1,950 a month to live in a small space in a great neighborhood? 52 Clark Street [Halstead] GMAP P*Shark

This was originally an apartment hotel, “The Clark Lane” (I have a postcard of the original lobby), whose selling point was “the ideal fireproof apartment house with hotel facilities in aristocratic Brooklyn Heights, four minutes from Wall Street”.
Alas, though outside is protected by BH landmarking, interior is not, so gorgeous original lobby with wonderful tiles was totally destroyed—tiles were so old they had original American Indian swastika designs on them, from before Nazis reversed the elements. A great shame.

oh. okay. you are right. that explains the moonface pricing!

I looked at few apartment in this building and as I recall there was something very depressing about the place. The apartments I saw seemed cell-like, for some reason. I went with a local broker but I get the impression that are ALWAYS apartments for rent here.
Ooo, awful. ^^^^^ Your description of the sink and oven door alone give me agita.
My wife and I made the mistake of renting in this building from April 2009-April 2010. The 2 doorwomen split 7 days of shifts between the 2 of them, they were always cranky or sleeping, I think one was fired by the time we left. Our unit was one of the ones that had just been renovated, we were the first to live in it. Our shower didn’t have hot water for weeks, our kitchen sink faucet broke and it took the super 3 months to order a replacement. The sinks were also about 8″ x 8″, ridiculously small which made no sense, and the oven was positioned as such that it couldn’t open fully. The best thing about the building is the proximity to the 2/3 and A/C. As donatella mentioned, you can rent directly from the building, no broker needed, though I’m not sure why anyone would want to.
*rob*, this isn’t a nice building and these apartments are really depressing. They are not spinster apartments, but young adult apartments for people who are not from NY, and don’t know any better right across the street from the 2/3 Clark St. Station, so convenient.
Anybody considering renting this apartment should just go to the super and not pay a broker.
“It’s a terrace. You can see the door to outside in one of the pics.”
Right, we’re talking about the door. But how can you tell it’s to a terrace?

maly, yes there are flash player issues again. every time I log on I get a flash player crash, which freezes my screen for about three minutes. Highly annoying. I don’t want to disable my plugin so I will forego the site for now.
