Surprise! The Prospect Park bike lanes are still stirring up controversy. Today the Brooklyn Paper reports that this PPW Bike Lane Survey started by Council members Steve Levin and Brad Lander got 800 responses on its first day. While the city has been analyzing traffic speed and accidents after the lane was put in, it wants community feedback before deciding whether or not to make the bike lane permanent. Questions deal with safety and design modifications. (One question asks if the bike lanes should be more compatible with the historic character of PPW.) In the meantime, rival bike lane protests are planned for this Thursday morning – supporters will be at GAP with protesters at PPW and Carroll Street. Uh oh!
Survey Says PPW Bike Lane Still Very Controversial [BK Paper]
This bike lane was brought about by the local Community Board. Not from any city-wide institution.
FUPlease- lots of anger. This is exactly the type of extremism that one commenter mentioned. Park slope is not a freeway to me. I visit often, and Marine park is a wonderful place to live, so why would you assume that I just blaze through PPW. In this free country of ours we can go wherever we like and have opinions about our likes and dislikes. No, you are correct, nobody asked me to come down PPW, but it is my right, and also my right to complain a waste of taxpayer dollars on a personal initiative of the mayor. Can’t bikers go through the park??? I don’t see cars in there anymore. And last time I checked, Brooklyn is one borough and we are allowed to leave our neighborhoods.
The bike lane that was put in on Pine Street in Philly adds about $1.00 to my cab fare from 30th St Station to my house. I’m not for it.
I like the new bikepath but do wish it kept more cyclist out of the park! The bike/runners lanes are pretty narrow. I am curious why more tickets aren’t issued to cars double parked on PPW – there is always a few.
The city has two distinct road systems – parkways and expressways. Proposect Park West is part of the parkway system of the Olmsted era. Prospect Expressway is what our friend from Marine Park should be using.
OK morralkan:
“….the Emperor….propaganda…..dictator…….buy himself another election…….”
Dude, you sound like a wild-eyed conspiracy theorist. When you go that far off the deep end no one will take you seriously.
“I’m a total non-smoker (haven’t smoked in more than 40 years)”
Good for you!
“I still resent anyone telling people that they cannot smoke on city streets, beaches, etc.”
Worst. Analogy. Ever. This article is about existing space is being divided between two uses. It has nothing to do with moral regulation.
“I have never ever driven a car and primarily use a bike or public transportation to get around.”
Good for you!
“Still, when I am being driven someplace, I would like the traffic to actually move instead of being stuck behind a procession of buses and trucks because what was formerly a 2 lane street is now 1 lane + bike lane.”
Have you driven on PPW in the past couple of months? Ever? Do you know where Brooklyn is? Pop quiz: how many lanes on PPW (either before or after the bike lane was installed, whatever is easier for you)?
“Vehicles that cannot move or move only very slowly pollute the air more than cars which get quickly in and out of the street.”
So you’re telling us all of those bikers should get off their bikes and drive cars (not vice versa)? You should work for the EPA. Dumbass.
“As someone who is now in his 60’s, I know it is only a matter of time before cycling around will not really be an option for me. I am then to be condemned and scorned because taking a cab or a lift from a friend is a much preferable option for me?”
Jesus christ you’re a sensitive little girl. No one is scorning anyone for taking a car. Take a car if you want, just don’t drive like a fucking asshole and deal with the slower traffic.
>don’t bother me with facts that contradict my propaganda
What facts are you (not) citing? That narrower roads lead to slower traffic speed? That fewer road lanes are good for residential areas? That a separated bike lane is the safest for bikes? That a buffered lane is even safer? That traffic is calmer (except for road ragers who want to scream down 8th?)
So a small inconvenience for drivers during school times should trump all these? For that matter, why the hell can’t those parents drop their kids off on the side streets to minimize holdups?
>The new configuration of PPW looks like crap!
Eye of the beholder…
Bike lanes are here to stay only if the Emperor and “don’t bother me with facts that contradict my propaganda” Sadik-Khan stay in office forever. If you like living under a dictator, Kensington Lite, then there are lots of countries, especially in the middle east that I am sure you would enjoy. It looks like the Emperor will not proceed to buy himself another election and may have to settle for trying to help that ass-kisser Quinn become the next mayor. (but he won’t be able to spend $100+ million of his money to do that)

As to the bike lane making it safe for your kids to ride a bike, how about letting them ride in the park (VERY close by) where the lanes are closed to vehicular traffic most of the daytime hours? Is it really that much safer for your children to be attempting to ride their bikes in a relatively narrow space with commuting cyclists speeding by?
The new configuration of PPW looks like crap!
I like the bike lane. I drive PPW regularly but don’t have a bike.
I like how traffic moves slower now.
People who expect to drive 50 mph down PPW can go suck a fuck.
