Surprise! The Prospect Park bike lanes are still stirring up controversy. Today the Brooklyn Paper reports that this PPW Bike Lane Survey started by Council members Steve Levin and Brad Lander got 800 responses on its first day. While the city has been analyzing traffic speed and accidents after the lane was put in, it wants community feedback before deciding whether or not to make the bike lane permanent. Questions deal with safety and design modifications. (One question asks if the bike lanes should be more compatible with the historic character of PPW.) In the meantime, rival bike lane protests are planned for this Thursday morning – supporters will be at GAP with protesters at PPW and Carroll Street. Uh oh!
Survey Says PPW Bike Lane Still Very Controversial [BK Paper]
cmu – you are a tyrant. going the wrong way is against the law!
>I guess CMU just thinks I am a man b/c I own a car -interesting..
No, just because you have hyper-macho views ;). Forgot your sex in my response, did know it.
But you and donna need to chill. It’s ridiculous to say there’s any danger here from the cyclists who sometimes flout strict traffic laws. Mostly the problem is cyclists also speed, if they’d go slow we would not have as many near-accidents.
Fyi: Paris has made ALL one-way streets two-way for cycles.
In some areas, traffic lights can be treated as stop signs by cyclists. And nobody wears stupid helmets to get a false sense of security.
Ever noted traffic in less-controlled area of the world? It’s live and let live. With the almost total lack of traffic on my street (Carroll), am I going 3 blocks out of the way to get to my house or ride against non-existent traffic? You guess. And if you cycled you’d do the same.
bike lanes suck. anything that gets in the way of me driving my 2005 subaru outback 50+ mph down residential streets is a waste of tax payer dollars. all bikers are reckless. my registration fees fund all infrastructure in nyc – therefore i am entitled to all the free parking i want. bikers should have to pay registration fees and buy insurance because i have to – and i think its unfair. once i was walking around and i saw a hipster on a bike hit an old lady on purpose – i think she died. this is transportation terrorism and it needs to stop.
Donatella, as part 2 of your experiment you should take your friend on a bike ride through brooklyn, on streets with and w/o bike lanes. Wonder how she would feel about brooklyn drivers.
FYI – I’m sick of the asshole bikers too. I now follow all bike laws to the T (except when no one’s around).
Ishtar…Agree with your points. Only thing I’d add is pedestrians here aren’t any better. They can cause some amazing accidents. Ticket everyone, I’d say.

Anger? Extremist? Why exactly is that? Because we call out people like you? You’re the ones ranting and raving about the Bloomberg and the conspiracy against cars and people like you. We’re just enjoying the bike lane over here.
I have a car and I drive and park it on PPW without issues. I also own a bike, and I ride in the bike lane. So do my children, safely now I might add. And I live here. And what exactly do you do, except drive thru every now and then? (Actually, I’m not sure you even do, or you wouldn’t be ranting about how “congested” and “ugly” PPW is now, because it is neither.)
Find some other issue to rant about the Bloomberg admin. Preferably one that you actually know something about (so you wouldn’t have to ask basic questions like “why do they need bike lanes in two directions?”), and that messes up your own neighborhood instead of ours.
*bobfrombrooklyn*: “Still amazed when I see someone biking, texting and pedaling through a red light against the flow of traffic.”
Smells like astroturf. Basically, this is some made up talking point. If you’ve seen this once in your life I’d be shocked.
Ishtar – no I’m a woman – I guess CMU just thinks I am a man b/c I own a car -interesting……..
Well I certainly miss speeding down PPW at 80mph mowing down all the moonfaces with their crotchfruit – a la *Rpb*
Haaaaaaaa
Well I just wrote the DMV to propose all cyclists now must register and start paying insurance! I will then take that up with my local congressmen etc etc just like these bike riders do all the time to get their bike lanes painted
Two can play at this game……BWAAAHHH HHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Having lived for many years in a college town over run with bikes, I firmly believe ticketing drivers and cyclist commiting traffic violations works very well. Even cyclist could rack up points against their DL and don’t get caught with an unlicensed bike. You either got a ticket for it or had it impounded on the spot.
Funny thing about NYC is that the cyclist are just as awful as the drivers out here. Both are extremely reckless, make unsafe manuvers at crazy speeds, run red lights, and have a total disregard for other people using the road.
Thank you Benson.
