For a renter who is looking to dwell in a house with some picturesque Brooklyn character, this Park Slope wood frame certainly has the requisite charm. The apartment itself, a garden unit, may be a bit more modest, but it still offers wood floors, a renovated kitchen, and in-unit laundry.
It is on Webster Place, one of Brooklyn’s one-block streets filled with low-scale dwellings. While there have been some changes to the exteriors of many of the houses, No. 23 is part of a six-house row with columned porches and bracketed cornices that retains its Italianate character. Painted in a variety of hues, the row houses make a colorful sight on the block. Along with what was once a matching row across the street, the group can be seen in a 1926 photograph of the tree-lined street.
The rows, which are not within the historic district, likely date to the late 1860s to early 1870s. Notices in local papers at the time show houses already on the block in 1869, as well as some still empty lots. By 1872, a tailor appears in the city directory as dwelling at No. 23. In 1874, owners were alerted they were to be assessed for the installation of gas lamps along the block, no doubt indicating a fairly well-established residential block. In 1943, residents shared memories of the “clean little street” with the Brooklyn Eagle, remembering green shutters on the houses, children playing on the block, and the lamps being lit.
This one-bedroom garden unit in the two-family house has an entrance under the stoop that includes some bonus storage. The bedroom faces the street while the open plan living area with kitchen faces the rear yard.
The listing photos show wood floors and white walls throughout. The kitchen is petite, with one wall of cabinets, but it does include a dishwasher. As well, the refrigerator is nicely tucked into a nook rather than intruding into the living room space. The living room does include the stacked washer/dryer; a virtually staged image suggests enclosing it in a cabinet.
The backdoor leads out to a private terrace under a deck with a view of the landscaped garden beyond. It appears to have plenty of room for eating, lounging, and plants in containers.
In addition to the storage under the stoop there are two closets, one in the bedroom and one outside of the bathroom. That bathroom has white fixtures, including a tub, and tiles.
The listing notes the building is non-smoking and dogs are not allowed. Showings by appointment start Friday, February 14.
