  1. “Why don’t they raise the property taxes in Brooklyn?

It’s insane that $1m+ houses have such diddly-squat property taxes when apartment owners are paying through the nose. . .”

What are you talking about diddly-squat property taxes? The annual taxes on that $2M brownstone must be astronomical.

Just because NJ has the highest property taxes in the nation– and oh, by the way they’re losing population, especially among those who contribute the most in taxes, and their real estate market sucks, doesn’t mean Brooklyn should decide to match them…

  2. It wasn’t Dave who read it, it was TheDudeAbides.

DudAbides, that article has been well covered here, and they moved back to Brooklyn, and they are regular readers and commenters here.

Their point was that even with two children in school, Brooklyn was still less expensive than New Jersey because of the taxes, and they missed Brooklyn.

In any case, take it with a grain of salt. Maybe “annoyed” was the writer’s word.

  3. “Crimsonson (class of ?) – I agree – but occasionally it is reasonable to wonder what the point of is all is. Wasn’t there some brief shining moment when this blog was about home renovation/improvement and not the sale of real estate? (I know, I know, I’ll wonder back to the forum where I belong, answering plumbing questions and “if I’ve renovated without permits will anyone ever catch me?”).”

Yes! But even more than just home renovation, the site was originally abou the love of brownstones and Brooklyn, the joy of finding a treasure and restoring it, the hunt for good deals, and the creation of communities. Then all the house hunters became house owners and Mr B started selling ads and the point of the site became “how much is my house worth?” and “how can I make it worth even more??” and “how can we keep the market booming??” You all have become nothing more than House Hoes.

  5. I read this morning a ‘The Hunt’ column from 2008 about a couple that moved back to Brooklyn from Maplewood, NJ. They originally bought a place in Boerum Hill for $400K in 1997, sold it in 2006 for $2.1mm, bought a place in Maplewood for $930K, and sold it for $875K. They were aghast at the “significant loss” they took on the Maplewood house.

    Does this annoy anyone else?

No, it sounds about right. They were lucky in their timing on the first one. the fact that they bought and sold so quickly the second time and lost money means they really didn’t understand the market.

But those types of profits from 1997 to 2006 are pretty standard.
