We seldom see a listing as remarkable as this one. It’s like a time machine back to the early 20th century, when this house at 457 74th Street in Bay Ridge was built.

We were planning to feature it as House of the Day, but by the time we saw the listing it was too late. Just 10 days after listing, it was already in contract, according to StreetEasy. We reached out to the agent for more info, but she declined to comment.

The photos reveal a two-family house seemingly preserved in amber, with mantels and many other quaint details. We hope whoever buys it will restore it. No doubt it needs a lot of work. The ask is (was) $898,000.

Do you think all the original details appealed to the buyers, or was it simply the relatively low asking price? (Or something else?) Anyone care to speculate on what the final sale price will be? What do you think of the house?

  1. Cate – it’s great you’re caching the photos on the brownstoner server now. I hope this will apply to all posts, including HOTD, etc?

It helps to keep these pictures on your server, still accessible for posterity, as opposed to simple links to sites that later take them down.

Could be one of the new great features for Brownstoner 2.0 😉

    • The avenue is 80% hookah bars, halal markets, and an open drug trade on the sidewalks. For now it all terminates around 74th Street, but it is making its way South very rapidly. The only non Arabs left in this part of Bay Ridge are the octogenarian homeowners and their tenants. As one of those tenants, I can say that there is a reason why prices are lower around these parts!

        • you obviously do not live in the immediate area, as I do. There is palpable tension between the middle eastern / non-middle eastern residents here. Who cares about my rent, I’m moving out after this lease is up. One and done. Buh-bye!

          • I live in the low 80s between 4th and 5th. The area north of 74th is definitely a bit more run down, more crowded, more obviously muslim that the areas south of 74th , but I don’t sense the tension you cite. Any neighborhood that has strong enclaves can feel excluding to people outside the group. These blocks don’t have much charm, they remind me of the blocks you see in Brooklyn’s Chinatown, primarily because of the congestion. 900K for this isn’t a great deal so I’d agree it probably went to a Chinese or Arab buyer or other investor looking solely for the investment/multi family aspect rather than owner occupier looking for a home. BTW, my block is a mix of old school Greek and Italian, the kids of those families, newer families priced out from other parts of the cities who tend to be more diverse – mixed families, more professional than blue collar, etc. It’s a good mix, very friendly, clean, and quiet.

  2. Fun! Is that Chinoiserie or was it an actual Chinese family that lived there? This would make a good film set for a Raymond Chandler story.
I looked at a 2 family house with the same floorpan in Kensington. They have decent square footage. From an owner-occupant standpoint they are not great. The houses are very long, which eats into the yard space. The kitchen is not the last room on the extension; their’s an extra bedroom tacked on which you have to walk through to get to the yard. Merging the kitchen with the back bedroom to create an entertaining space is not so great either, since it doesn’t fill the whole width of the house.
