With original interiors like these, the listing for 891 Saint Marks Avenue is something of a tease: Show us more pictures! Please! The Axel Hedman-designed limestone house sits on an extra-deep lot across the street from the Brooklyn Children’s Museum–arguably one of the best blocks in Crown Heights. According to the listing, the one-family pad still retains some of its original sconces in addition to other details like marble sinks and inlaid floors. How much will this little slice of heaven run ya? $875,000.

  1. I vote for this house being worth $500k, if only because that makes the house we love a block away even less. 😉

Seriously, a great block and a nice ‘hood. But 875 seems about 50k too high.

  2. This house was bought for $500K on 11/9/2004 with a $333,700 mortgage What makes it worth $875K toady? To me, it’s still worth $500K especially in this economy which is much worth than what it was in 2004.

  3. Back stairs are service stairways, so servants weren’t traipsing up the front stairs in front of guests. Out of sight, and all that. They were especially useful for the ground floor to parlour floor entry, as the formal dining room was on the parlour floor, in this house, where the kitchen is now. There was probably a dumb waiter in the hallway as well, but some things needed to be carried upstairs for service. It’s a bit unusual for the service stairs to continue up to the bedroom floor, but probably convenient for the staff. Most of these houses didn’t have 3 story extensions, only two. A lot of times, these extensions were built just to accommodate a really wow formal dining room or study on the parlor floor. The extra rooms above and below are gravy.

This was once the poshest brownstone block in Crown Heights North. I’ve been in several houses by different architects on this block, and all but one had service stairs in the back.

M4L, “my” mansion rules! It has service stairs, too.

  4. It looks really nice from what is shown. Can’t comment on the price.

At least there is a pretty good floorplan but leaves questions. The back narrower rooms on the basement-third foor look like addition, but is see other adjacent buildings have the extra room in the back as well. Was this common on the extra deep lots? Backstairs go from basement extending through parlor floor and second floor, but not to the third.
