House of the Day: 600A Jefferson Avenue
Wow. This turn-of-the-century brownstone at 600A Jefferson Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant is stunning. The original architectural details, including gorgeous parquet floors and wooden built-ins, are some of the most impressive we’ve seen in a long time. (We wish they’d included a photo of the original icebox!) Our only reservation about the listing is the mention…

The original architectural details, including gorgeous parquet floors and wooden built-ins, are some of the most impressive we’ve seen in a long time. (We wish they’d included a photo of the original icebox!) Our only reservation about the listing is the mention of a top-floor rental, which implies some access issues through the owner-occupied part of the house. And $900,000 is definitely at the high end of prices for this neck of the woods. Then again, the house itself is pretty special and certainly deserves to sell at a premium.

Darn it, I’m having major house envy. THIS floor plan would work for us! Of course, the price is twice our budget, but that is an irrelevant detail.
Pigeon…I’m going to guess that was originally a fireplace and the mirror was lengthened when they removed the fireplace. i suspect they removed the fireplace and put in a low radiator enclosed in that box-like structure in front of it.
As to what you do with it, you check your makeup before you head out for the cheatin’ side of town.
I looked at this house a few months ago. It had been listed with Weichert realty for many months, originally priced in the high 800s i believe. When I looked at it, they had dropped the asking to 730k or so. They seemed to be getting interest at that price, but I don’t know what happened after that. It’s a gorgeous house though.
Oh, I am in love with this place. Incredible built-ins and stained glass. And it’s all beautifully preserved.
One unusual feature of this property is the owner’s unit is a triplex, so every floor is used for its original purpose and not jammed up with bedrooms and bathrooms where they don’t belong.
The renter can pass me on the stairs all they want. I’m getting that original ice box for myself.
Would love to see photos of the pass-through butler’s pantry, icebox, and rental apartment.
The price is high for a property outside the historic district. The baths and kitchens need to be restored to their former glory. I would guess it needs an electrical and plumbing upgrade. But it’s special.
MM, I’d probably prefer strangers to friends or relatives!!!!
Yes, pigeon, that’s an incredibly fancy floor for the garden level.
I see we’ve gotten our terminology in synch.
Additionally, that built in (which is pictured above) is on the back end of the garden level room and it too is incredibly fancy. You can see the kitchen through the doorway.
Unlike most garden levels, I would certainly have that room as a formal dining room, especially since you can eat in the kitchen on informal occasions with this setup.
The beautiful wood-enclosed mirror contraption in the broker’s first interior photo… what do you call these things?
What do you do with it?
I appreciate the hitorical splendor of these things, but… do people like these seeing a giant mirror as soon as they walk in the door?
I agree dibs… that garden level floor is super fancy.
Isn’t unusual to have a fancy floor in the garden level?
Isn’t fancy much more common in parlor?
Brownstone goodness! Beautiful details. Let’s face it, most people will put in new kitchens and baths anyway. There’s a lot to work with here. While a top floor tenant is not ideal, lots of people make it work, including renting to friends or relatives whom they can trust. Agree price is agressive to say the least, but if they want to sell, it will be adjusted downward by a nice chunk. Love the floors, built-ins, fretwork, everything.
I also love how so many homes in bedstuy are very well preserved. The original work was respected by the occupants.
