House of the Day: 600A Jefferson Avenue
Wow. This turn-of-the-century brownstone at 600A Jefferson Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant is stunning. The original architectural details, including gorgeous parquet floors and wooden built-ins, are some of the most impressive we’ve seen in a long time. The original architectural details, including gorgeous parquet floors and wooden built-ins, are some of the most impressive we’ve seen in a long time. (We wish they’d included a photo of the original icebox!) Our only reservation about the listing is the mention of a top-floor rental, which implies some access issues through the owner-occupied part of the house. And $900,000 is definitely at the high end of prices for this neck of the woods. Then again, the house itself is pretty special and certainly deserves to sell at a premium.

Dave, I have seen many houses with an original pier mirror in the front parlor opposite the door rather than a fireplace. They are relatively late models, 1890s through Edwardian. The Edwardian ones often dispensed with fireplaces altogether.
Amzi, are these photos older? Because I don’t see many plugs in the photos. Or maybe they didn’t do a top-to-bottom upgrade, which would have required a certain number of points per room.
The house is very nice, but the price is very high. For 900k I want to be within the Stuyvesant Heights historic district and a bigger house. Corcoran had a real nice house on Decatur for 699k just a week ago. I don’t know if the listing got pulled or sold fast. I hope they can get close to ask.
Then it might get over $800K. The real stumbling block at that price will be to find the potential buyer who wants to either keep the top floor rental or is willing to pay a premium (once you include the costs of converting to a single family) for the historic appeal of the house.
electrical and plumbing was upgraded this summer…
The pier mirror are all original in this house. Nothing has been removed this place even has a cedar closet in the cellar… This house will be in the Stuyvesant Heights North historic district in a few years. LPC is looking at this area…
Gorgeous. If it does need electrical and plumbing upgrades, on top of any freshening of the bathrooms and kitchen, I’d expect this to go for between $750 and 800. How much did that pair of houses across the street go for, and were they in condition at all comparable to this?
Amzi, is the electrical and plumbing upgraded???
If it needs electrical and plumbing upgrade then it is way overpriced…
I have been in this house many times and this house is quite lovely. Designed by Henry B. Hill for F.C. Swimm who lived at 598. Mr. Ernest Fritter from Germany was the first owner he made is money being a butter and milk dealer. This house is truly stuck in the 1890s. The original ice box is something to see. Great back yard the only thing is the kitchen is stuck in the 1970s which I think is a good thing. Kitchens are personal and that should be done to everyone own taste.
