House of the Day: 14 Garden Place

We might as well start the year out with a bang…This four-story brownstone at 14 Garden Place in Brooklyn Heights is pretty spectacular. In fact, it looks about perfect. Beaucoup fireplaces and moldings, tasteful built-ins, high ceilings, updated kitchen, attractive backyard. Of course, the owners know what they’ve got and, at $4,700,000 (or $1,175 per square foot) have priced it accordingly high. It’s been on the market for more than two months now with no takers. Think that’ll change once the bonus money starts clearing?

I’ll also take a ticket for the missing master bath and kitchen floor train. Both are unforgivable at this price, IMO. But I’m sure that won’t stop someone from buying it. Besides, the kitchen floor is an easy enough fix.
In the interest of finding something to complain about, I’ll go with….no master bath and too far to the subway.
This is a beautiful house, no doubt about it. My only complaint is all of the painted woodwork. Contrasting this house to today’s co-op, part of what makes the co-op attractive, especially when the photos are blown up full screen, is the warmth of the woodwork. This house, while very well done, is too white and cold for my taste. I would have to strip the woodwork, at least on the parlor floor and the stairs. Aside from that, I can’t really complain.
Of course, easy to complain when you can’t afford it, anyway.

ok ok – I agree, I didn’t like the kitchen floor at all – but everything else is grand

This is STUNNING.
Who has some bonus money to throw my way?
That is one gorgeous house!
But at this price point, I’m going to nitpick:
Needs a Master Bathroom
The ceramic tile in the kitchen has to go! It’s ghastly. A nice limestone is more appropriate.
The paint colors are too mauve-ish for me.
I want that red crushed velvet sofa!
Well, there is the small problem of having Biff & Minard as neighbors. otherwise, it lookls like a spectacular restoration. The furniture can go though.
I don’t care what any of you have to say with your nitpicking….
I love this place!
now if I only had 4 million -ahhh to dream
Ooh… Be still my heart.
This house makes me wish I were more industrious.
