House of the Day: 14 Garden Place

We might as well start the year out with a bang…This four-story brownstone at 14 Garden Place in Brooklyn Heights is pretty spectacular. In fact, it looks about perfect. Beaucoup fireplaces and moldings, tasteful built-ins, high ceilings, updated kitchen, attractive backyard. Of course, the owners know what they’ve got and, at $4,700,000 (or $1,175 per square foot) have priced it accordingly high. It’s been on the market for more than two months now with no takers. Think that’ll change once the bonus money starts clearing?

while not as wide, and in cobble hill, the brownstone i owned had the exact layout – powder rooms on both lower level floors, and AND we had a master bathroom.
the layout does exemplify my main issue with flow of brownstones. basically, we never left the ground level cause that was where the kitchen and casual eating areas were along with the tv room. if we entertained, then we had to carry the food up to the formal dining room (no maid service, sorry!).
if you try to jam the kitchen in on the parlor level with the formal dining and living room, then gets a bit crowded.
did not sell it cause of layout, but cause of divorce, however, i just didn’t love the vertical thing in the end.
believe it or not, i looked for a year for a brownstone, and really really wanted one at the time. 2 purchases later, i only looked at 2 brownstones, and the love affair was simply totally over. current set-up is 2000 sq ft over 2 floors (with a deck and outdoor access on both levels) and a garden. it feels like more use-able living space than the bigger brownstone did.
Regarding the painted woodwork – older homes (not sure when this one dates from) often used old growth pine for the woodwork and often painted it or varnished it to look like more expensive wood. Wouldn’t be surpised if this place was painted originally. I like the wall colors too, unlike many others here…. Pretty much like everything about this place, looks like home if I had a bit more money…
Zarathustra, I just went through your comments in your profile and you seem to not like anything, ever.
Please tell us specifically which moldings in this house are injection molded.
CarGar- trust me by the time I finish redecorating and painting this would not be white and cold. But I do find white light particularly beautiful. It all depends on what you do with it.It’s the north light lover in me. Let me get out the paint chips 🙂
Aargh, all of the original trim has been painted over and lots of molding appears to be injection molded plastic. Cheap reno.
Yes, 11217, although the two powder rooms are an amenity seldom found, the other two bathrooms are a disappointment.
I’m asssuming they are fabulous Waterworks designs but with no pics, who knows.
It has ONE BATHTUB in an almost 5 million dollar house?!?
It has 1 full bath, one 3/4 bath (shower stall, no tub) and two half baths, so technically that would be 2 3/4 baths if added up mathematically.

Well, this is a pretty cozy looking museum.
