Schwing! This new listing at 588 5th Street isn’t hard to get excited about. Located on a park block in the Central Slope, the single-family house has amazing original details, including parquet floors, wood moldings, mirrors, and plaster moldings. The unusual facade, a mix of brick and brownstone, is also part of the package. The kitchen definitely needs some renovating, but it’s huge and has some nice old built-ins that we’d want to try to keep. The asking price is $2,500,000 and we think they’ll get pretty darn close to it.

How many Parlours does one need? I like the kitchen living and dining all on the same floor.
makes it tough when watching TV and needing that little snack, no, its not about going up and down, not at my age…………
LMAO to DH at 1:55 and ditto at 2:19.
Wow, how often do you come across a house like this? Hardly touched since it was built but not neglected. A unique facade, lovely woodwork, near the park. Whoever gets this is fortunate indeed.
Nomi, make sure the drawer runners are in good condition. Wax the part of the drawer that runs along them with a block of beeswax or a beeswax candle. That should smooth the operation.
I dunno about this place, after all at this price you could buy in Cobble Hill instead of settling for PS.
The kitchen does NOT need renovation. Not the part of it you can see. It needs better appliances — and hide the fridge in the pantry.
Who knows what the other cupboards and sink look like, since they didn’t take a photo.
I’d rip out the tile, though, and put in wood (if money were no object). Prettier and more comfortable. Obviously you need a big table, or several, to use as a workspace. Moon River Chattel makes nice counter height ones with marble, wood, metal, etc.
I think the garden level will be a gut and most of the rest will be a gut too. Regular folks can accommodate themselves to the eccentricities of an old house but not the super rich and especially not their architects and interior designers.
I think the ‘bath on each floor’ refers to the previous sentence about bedroom floors.
Oh, I LOVE that garden….
Yes, would be a shame to gut the kitchen! But as nice as those old cabinets are, the drawers are SO awkward to open and close. But maybe there’s a way to make that easier while keeping them?
Yes, great house. But does seem high especially if Minard is right and plumbing and electric need to be updated.
Otherwise, hopefully not major work needed. Except for kitchen and that ceiling and probably some other ceilings/walls, would not change much. Oh, there’s no bathroom til third floor….hm. Yeah, maybe the laundry room could take a half bath.
