House of the Day: 77 Midwood Street
This new listing at 77 Midwood Street may not be the priciest listing in PLG–that distinction still belongs to 20 Midwood Street at $1,780,000–but it’s still a pretty penny for the beautiful but historically discounted nabe. This new listing at 77 Midwood Street may not be the priciest listing in PLG–that distinction still belongs to 20 Midwood Street at $1,780,000–but it’s still a pretty penny for the beautiful but historically discounted nabe. We suspect that Number 77, which is asking $1,579,000, may make life difficult for Number 20, given that the less expensive house’s historic details look just as impressive. We shall see though: The five-bedroom house traded for $1,300,000 back in 2007 (after being a House of the Day in 2006). Update: For anyone curious about what the kitchen looks like, you can check out 77MidwoodStreet.com.

It is considered special, benson, BECAUSE it is in New York. If you want to spend 1.6 Million dollars and don’t care where in the country you live, I would agree, you could get a MUCH bigger house, and a 6 car garage and probably a few (nice) cars to start to fill up that garage… But, you wouldn’t be what looks like 3 blocks from Prospect Park, and 4 or 5 stops from Manhattan. It looks VERY special to me, in terms of its size, that garage, and the renovation, the original detail… But, if being in Brooklyn, with such easy access to the city is not your thing, there would be no reason to live here. If you work in the city and have a family, and could afford this, it seems kind of amazing… We can dream.
May I nominate this thread as a marker for a new phase of irrational exuberance?
Yes, brooklyndreamland…yup. My sister lives just south of PLG right off Flatbush too and….yes.
Well said, its a regrettable chore having to traverse the hoi polloi on Flatbush when returning from afternoon tea.
You can (finally) walk to a nice restaurant now and the dollar vans usually stop for lights 🙂
No more comments today; I’m going out.
“Landmarking couldn’t come sooner”.
Blayze,
It came, in 1979!
All of Lefferts Manor , plus two blocks each (more or less) of Lefferts Ave. and Sterling Street comprise the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens Historic District.
Wow, this is certainly a special house, especially if you are an unpainted tiger oak fan (and who isn’t). The leaded windows are beautiful. My only gripe on this house, which is certainly a bargain compared to just about anything in Park Slope, is Flatbush Avenue. That end of Flatbush Avenue doesn’t seem to offer much in the way of nice shopping and restaurants. It is crowded and you take your life in your hands with the dollar vans flying by. For a million and a half, I would want to be able to walk from this beautiful house to a nice restuarant and back home, without getting run over by a dollar van (or are they two dolar vans now?).
This is a beautiful house, NY or not. The price….well, that applies to any real estate in NY, yeah?
This house is one of six semi-detached houses on Midwood I, the like of which I’ve seen nowhere else. A truly beautiful house on what is my favorite PLG/LM block (even though it’s not MY block if Midwood Street).
We recently walked down this block with my brother-in-law, who is not an old house lover. Still, he remarked about how beautiful these houses are.
