Crown Heights House for Sale -- 949 Saint Johns Place

This seven-bedroom limestone in Crown Heights is packed with original detail, including some wild carved woodwork.

A fair amount of that greets you in the entrance hallway, where there’s a pier mirror with a bench, wainscoting, a newel post and double-arched fretwork screen. There’s more inside, including a floor-to-ceiling fireplace mantel with inlaid beveled mirrors in the living room, and in the dining room a massive hutch with beveled glass, along with wood paneling, stained glass and a coffered ceiling.

Other details include inlaid parquet floors, moldings and pocket doors.

It’s currently laid out as a four-bedroom duplex with a two-bedroom rental unit on the top floor. It’d be easy enough to make a grand one-family out of it, of course. There’s plenty of room here either way — the house is 20 feet wide, on a lot that stretches 130 feet, and includes a front garden.

As for its condition, the listing, from Justin Dupree of Corcoran, says the house has recently been “partially restored.” So what you’re seeing in the photos is not necessarily indicative of the condition throughout (and the photos themselves show some rough edges). It’d be a fair guess that bathrooms and kitchens — none of which are pictured — need upgrading, and possibly a lot more besides.

So there’s work to be done, but there’s also obvious potential. The ask is $1,695,000.

Like what you see?

  1. The cast iron piece in the middle is a backplate (or essentially a cover). It works for both safety and aesthetics. I’m quite certain that you take the plate off when burning the gas. Though in my head it makes sense that if the plate were left on it would heat up just like a cast iron radiator.
