House of the Day: Crazy in Crown Heights
This is one of the more insanely overpriced houses we’ve seen in a while. This is one of the more insanely overpriced houses we’ve seen in a while. While the original exterior is perfectly nice, $1.4 million for a three-story (basement doesn’t count in this case in our opinion) house in Crown Heights is pushing it. And if you consider dropped ceilings and linoleum floors to be “luxury” (as the ad calls the house), then this could be your lucky day. If, however, period details and preservation of capital is your thing, you may want to steer clear of President and Nostrand, where this house and its delusional broker sit waiting for a fool and his money.
Beautiful Luxury House [Craigslist] GMAP
Probably not brownstoner.com readers market or nabe….but President St. is very impressive on those couple blocks and will command very high price for those who most want to live there.
Maybe not $1.4m (and definitely not the $14m the guy put on craigslist)… but wouldn’t be shocked if damn close to it.
Anon 3:51 – if you have such a problem with Brownstoner’s opinion, then why are you reading his site?
Hal,
I agree with your comment (1:55PM). While the price is steep, Brownstoner has the tendency to often dismiss and “diss” Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy without doing the proper research. The block you are referring to is in fact VERY LOVELY!
Brownstoner cannot help himself. His attitudes about certain neighborhoods are so deeply ingrained he is not even aware of it. He would have been bad mouthing Clinton Hill and Fort Greene 5-10 years ago too (when the demo profile of these two neighborhoods was more like the profile of Crown Heights today.)
The zoning for this block of President Street is R2, compared to the more ubiquitous R6, which covers most of Crown Height and virtually all of Clinton Hill.
Bubblicious!
However, it’s not landmarked, so you know all those nice mansions could be torn down tomorrow and replaced by whatever (check out some of the horrors already in the neighborhood, or on Ocean Pkwy. in Borough Park) — hence the opposition from some camps to any landmarking in Crown Heights.
At least in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill you’re pretty safe from that sort of thing (even if the threat of Ratnerville continues to loom).
Sorry folks, but the picture of the kitchen is probably pretty indicative of the new renovations in the house. It looks new and clean but not high end – lino floor, home depot looking shiny cabinets etc. – not a $1.4 million job, especially if you are asking that price in Crown Heights. That kitchen is not on the basement floor either (there are two kitchens per the description, the pictured one is the new one on the second floor – note the stairs in the background).
Brownstoner, you should find out about a block before knocking it so hard. This stretch of President, which is between NY and Brooklyn not Nostrand, is as amazing as any block on Clinton Ave. but with bigger yards and a great hilltop view. You should really go and see for yourself. As for the interior, one would really have to see in person. But I don’t see why this price is any crazier than the hefty sums y’all have been paying in Clinton Hill.
I’m guessing the house is #1265 President. Try Google Earth to view the proximity of the two trees, and the roofline. Note the peaked facade on the house to the left. I will confirm tonight and post.
