Here’s an old-school flat in Greenpoint with loads of intact character and a fair amount of space for the price. Despite alterations, the Edwardian apartment at 144 Milton Street has a flexible six-room layout that could be used as a one-bedroom or a two-bedroom.

It’s on the top floor of a two-story, two-unit brick townhouse with a porch and neo-Classical details such as columns and dentil molding. Designed by architect Philemon Tillion and built in 1909 for James T. Kelly, the house overlooks a scenic block in the historic district. Appearing neatly kept in photos, it’s been in the same family since at least the 1970s, public records show.

In the original details department are high ceilings, wood floors, and woodwork including six-panel doors. The front parlor boasts a console mirror and bay window. A columned fretwork screen separates it from the second parlor/flex bedroom with a closet.

A built-in mirrored sideboard has survived in the rear dining room. Pocket doors and a transom with leaded glass windows divide the rear room from a small interior room with a ceiling fan and closet, originally a bedroom.

A small side room in the front has an original built-in wardrobe and originally fit a twin bed. A more recently added closet makes the room more practical to use as an office than a bedroom. Closets in the unit total four.

The side kitchen is large and appears in good condition, with an extensive counter, mosaic tile backsplash, and wood cabinets. The petite bathroom has a shower and pedestal sink but no tub. There is no dishwasher or in-unit laundry.

The floor plan shows the apartment configured as a one-bedroom, but both large windowed rooms could also work as bedrooms, or a family could use the two middle rooms as bedrooms.

Listed by Yuval Vidal and Caroline Gruchawka of Compass, the unit is priced at $4,500 a month. What do you think?
