There is lots of Italianate eye candy on view in this Fort Greene rental and it comes with an equally impressive monthly price. Plasterwork, marble mantels, a curved stair with coffin corner, and more details fill the brownstone at 216 Carlton Street. Other perks include four floors of living space, a renovated kitchen, a second story terrace, updated bathrooms, and a generous number of bedrooms.

In the Fort Greene Historic District and just around the corner from the park, the 21-foot-wide brownstone is one of a pair built circa 1865 by builder Thomas B. Jackson , according to the designation report. While the brownstone retains an original cornice, the lintels and door surround were stripped between the circa 1940 tax photo and the 1978 designation of the district. Records show the row house was converted to a five-family dwelling in the 1950s, so it is possible the exterior alterations happened at that time. The house was converted to a two-family in 2009.

Now it’s set up as a single-family with two floors of bedroom space above the parlor level. The garden floor has a guest suite or office with an en suite full bath as well as a family room with access to the rear yard.

On the parlor level there are the expected grand proportions with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a massive ceiling medallion. The Italianate marble mantel is one of seven mantels in the house.

Pocket doors open into the eat-in kitchen with cabinets fitted into an arched niche. In the rear extension is a sunroom with French doors to a rear deck.

The second floor could work as two bedrooms or a full-floor suite with a bedroom and private terrace at the rear and a library and walk-in closet at the front. A full bath with a tub and a shower is at the center of the floor.

In addition to the terrace and deck, there is a large rear yard with a stone patio.

Nick Gavin and Allie Fraza of Compass have the no-fee listing and the rental is priced at $25,000 a month. Worth the ask?

  1. Great house and one of the best locations in a dynamic and beautiful neighborhood but that rent means a very transient occupancy or tenancy…hhm suspect a near future sale
