Following last week’s public hearing, last night the CB6 Transportation Committee presented the first draft of a resolution concerning the Prospect Park West bike lane and “related issues.” Included in the draft: “CB6 is not a party and takes no position with respect to [the PPW lawsuit], but further acknowledges that DOT, in its discretion, may deem it prudent to defer modifications… until that legal proceeding is continued.” The modifications recommended included raising and widening the pedestrian safety islands with an “appropriate design for public review,” restoring parking spaces, installing rumble strips near pedestrian crossings, and the continued study of the safety and flow of traffic. The entrances at Garfield Place, 3rd, 11th, 9th and 5th Street (into Litchfield Villa) were asked to be reconfigured. Also, during rush hour, DOT was asked to “further traffic signal adjustments and attention to unloading/loading ‘hot spots.'” Some in the audience stressed that DOT needs to look closely at the relationship with bikers and pedestrians, rather than bikers and motorists. The draft will be considered by the full board on Wednesday, April 13th.

  1. Also, think the choice of the winter photo for the ‘before’ and the summer one for the ‘after’ is amusingly biased.

(I’m indifferent to the bike lane itself, based on what I know. Just its supporters annoy me much more than its opponents.)

  2. “if you want to explain the traffic problems, perhaps you may want to FIRST look at the folks IN the traffic”

So there *are* traffic problems? First time I have heard a bike lane supporter say this.

  3. And to expand on that… How long have you lived in Brooklyn?! You don’t see how folks in this fine town enjoy double-parking IN FRONT OF empty parking spaces… refuse to pull 10 feet forward because where they stop is more important than anything else… etc. etc. And these are the VERY SAME people who will not hesitate to blast their horn at you if you *dare* do the same thing.

(Also, if you look at the angle of the car — he is neither pulling in nor pulling out.)

  4. (And I’m in no way dismissing pedestrian and bicyclist arrogance… just saying that if you want to explain the traffic problems, perhaps you may want to FIRST look at the folks IN the traffic — not the lane completely separated from the traffic.

  5. tybur6, it’s not a video. it’s a still pic that captures a moment in time. How do you know that car isn’t pulling away from the curb?

  6. In the “before” photo, please notice the towncar is essentially double parking (narrowing the travel lane) even though there is ABSOLUTELY no reason for him not to pull in 5 feet closer to the curb!

This is the arrogance that is the route of the PPW traffic snarls, honking, and safety issues. NOT the bike lane.
