Following last week’s public hearing, last night the CB6 Transportation Committee presented the first draft of a resolution concerning the Prospect Park West bike lane and “related issues.” Included in the draft: “CB6 is not a party and takes no position with respect to [the PPW lawsuit], but further acknowledges that DOT, in its discretion, may deem it prudent to defer modifications… until that legal proceeding is continued.” The modifications recommended included raising and widening the pedestrian safety islands with an “appropriate design for public review,” restoring parking spaces, installing rumble strips near pedestrian crossings, and the continued study of the safety and flow of traffic. The entrances at Garfield Place, 3rd, 11th, 9th and 5th Street (into Litchfield Villa) were asked to be reconfigured. Also, during rush hour, DOT was asked to “further traffic signal adjustments and attention to unloading/loading ‘hot spots.'” Some in the audience stressed that DOT needs to look closely at the relationship with bikers and pedestrians, rather than bikers and motorists. The draft will be considered by the full board on Wednesday, April 13th.

Rob — You should have a chat with the bike messengers and delivery guys. They have ALL had major crashes and many have had serious injuries.
YES, because they are the biggest offenders at blowing through stoplights. They get what they deserve. I’m serious.
“no. the real reason for all this shit is cuz all the molly and joshes who now infest inner cities dont know how to ride in traffic anything more cumbersome than what they are used to in their cul-de-sacs.”
riding a bicycle is more urban than suburban.
driving a car, not so much.

Don’t be a tard yourself.

Rob — funnily enough, this “need” seems to be the primary basis of the NBBL lawsuit. Looking both ways (and possibly having to wait 8 secs) is far too taxing, and near impossible for some.
no. the real reason for all this shit is cuz all the molly and joshes who now infest inner cities dont know how to ride in traffic anything more cumbersome than what they are used to in their cul-de-sacs. funny how bike messengers and delivery guys NEVER had a problem riding bikes, it’s only when special snowflakes from ohio, all of a sudden, need to start riding bikes that everthing needs to be changed to suit their needs.

“(I’m indifferent to the bike lane itself, based on what I know. Just its supporters annoy me much more than its opponents.)”
Funny, that is pretty much my sentiment, except in reverse.
I think the anti people are much more annoying than the pro.

etson — There have ALWAYS been traffic problems in and around the Grand Army Plaza. The bike lane has not exacerbated them — only the perception of them. If folks double and double-and-a-half park (as they did with the 3-lane road), it may impact traffic flow. This is neither new, nor worsened.
Oh, and of course the photos are silly.
But if you had a nice summer day photo for the before — the impact would actually be very similar. The ONLY reason folks think the new configuration has “aesthetic” issues is because they don’t see any value in the bike lane… folks who see value in the bike lane (I think that number is around 70% in the Park Slope area), both bikers and pedestrians… and drivers!!… see a much more beautiful road with multiple uses.
DIBS — coffee is still brewing. I’m calmer *after* coffee.
