This Sunday there’s going to be a gathering in support of the Prospect Park West bike lane convening at Grand Army Plaza at 10:30 a.m. It’ll be followed by an 11 a.m. ride/walk to the end of the lane in Windsor Terrace. Free t-shirts are going to be given out at the start, and at the end some local businesses—including Bark and Blue Sky Bakery—will provide eats. Members of Transportation Alternatives will be stationed along the route to insure that no cross-walking senior citizens are run over by reckless tricycle riders. GMAP

  1. Last weekend, over the course of a half hour I saw scores of young children riding in this bike lane along with parents and others. I saw no conflicts with pedestrians or motorists. The PPW bike path is one of the most fantastic infrastructure projects we’ve ever seen in the neighborhood. Chuck Schumer, Iris Weinshall, Norman Steisel and the people who are suing this project ought to feel a deep sense of shame.

  2. The whole BS about the bike lane not being used is bogus especially since the main complaint is having to dodge bikers when you cross the lane. Its not a Wile E Coyote cartoon where nothing is coming then you step out only to be hit by a biker! I agree the bumps could be good or a barrier that arches so that bikes need to slow down. I still think the biggest issue is education about how and how not to bike in NYC.

  3. @Butterfly – all winter long the anti-bike lane folks have been using their connections to get articles written about how *no one* rides the bike lane. The New York magazine article a few weeks ago mentioned that they were showing off their spy camera and talking about how empty it was, despite there being a couple inches of snow on the ground. It’s not being organized for “something that is already there”, it’s being organized for something that is under attack and at threat of being removed.

  4. I know puerile is the stuff in the dispenser by the elevator, what is jejune–some flowery eau de toilette?

The best defense is a strong offense. Not really sure who that applies to in this case.

  5. Will the Spandex Ballet be speeding through traffic lights and terrorizing slower riders and pedestrians? Just like the Cinzano team in “Breaking Away” they’ll upend someone with a finely-placed air pump.
