marriottBlogger Transfer ponders the dearth of hotels in downtown Brooklyn:

Why does nearside Brooklyn only have one Hotel? Where do all those parents stay when visiting their South Brooklyn dwelling Oberlin grad kids… Well the Marriot is building 28 more stories of overpriced (yes, $210/night for Downtown Brooklyn, monopoly is a beautiful thing, Mom) chain experience.

According to New York Construction, the hotel is indeed in the process of a $77 million, 24-story, 190,000-square-foot expansion that will almost double room capacity from 376 to 656. Ian Schrager can’t be far behind.

  1. Don’t forget about the 8-story Holiday Inn going in at Union & 3rd Ave. There’s also supposed to be a “boutique” hotel going into the Boylmegreen building at Smith & Atlantic.

And there’s a B&B in Carroll Gardens somewhere that’s been around a long time. For that matter, Brownstoner, I’m surprised you didn’t give a mention to the Akwaaba Mansion in Bed Stuy. Don’t call it a comeback, they been here for years.

  2. The Marriott expansion has been under construction for quite a long time now.

But there are other hotels in the works that should be finished before that’s done:

There’s what is being called a “boutique” hotel under construction (for last 5 years but looking like it’s nearing completion) on Clark St in Brooklyn Heights.

And there’s a cheaper place going in near Court and Atlantic. Forget what it was, but something along the likes of a Courtyard or Red Roof Inn. Something very odd, but useful, for the area.
