Today is National Bike to Work Day, and NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Kha thinks there are more and more reasons to start biking NYC: “With more than 650 lane miles of routes on streets and in parks and with increasing bike parking options across the city, more and more New Yorkers are discovering that bicycling is a safe, convenient and fun way to get around.” Borough President Marty Markowitz celebrated the last week of Bike Month NYC by giving out breakfast this morning to bicycling commuters at Borough Hall. And while there wasn’t a big turn-out at Borough Hall (that’s Marty enjoying a rare moment of solitude on the steps), we’re assuming that only because everyone was too busy, what else, biking to work!

  1. So, waiting for 20 mins on the 6-train platform (which is 20 degrees hotter than upstairs because of the train air conditioning exhaust) makes you sweat less than a leisurely bike ride??

Pete — I was using the Google Maps distances from 116th to 25th… it brings you onto the east river bike path (which sucks… so many breaks) so it say 6 miles.

  2. a few people in my old office biked to work, and they REEKED all day. Their BO made it extremely uncomfortable for other employees.

At my new office, there are a few bikers and they “do the right thing” by showering (at the gym) before coming into the office.

DO NOT BIKE TO WORK IF YOU HAVE BO ISSUES TO BEGIN WITH

Of course they can force retrofittings. Duh.

The law does apply to old buildings, but it doesn’t require the property owner to install bike parking.

I see we have a new moron here.

  4. but bob you were probably the only one. if like 30 people brought their bikes into the office it would take on the atmosphere of some sort of williamsburg trailer park. and dibs is right, it’s only for new buildings. maybe they can make bikes smaller? they are way too big. i used to have a hard time getting onto mine when i had one!

The law does apply to old buildings, but it doesn’t require the property owner to install bike parking. It just requires the property owner to let office tenants bring their bikes up to their own offices, which until recently most buildings forbid.
