Today is National Bike to Work Day, and NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Kha thinks there are more and more reasons to start biking NYC: “With more than 650 lane miles of routes on streets and in parks and with increasing bike parking options across the city, more and more New Yorkers are discovering that bicycling is a safe, convenient and fun way to get around.” Borough President Marty Markowitz celebrated the last week of Bike Month NYC by giving out breakfast this morning to bicycling commuters at Borough Hall. And while there wasn’t a big turn-out at Borough Hall (that’s Marty enjoying a rare moment of solitude on the steps), we’re assuming that only because everyone was too busy, what else, biking to work!

  1. “Dealing with BO on the subway is presumably – only temporary and thus, somewhat tolerable.”

Are you joking? If you take the subway EVERY DAY, you are potentially exposed to far more B.O. than if your co-worker rides a bike in and has B.O. on relatively warm days. If the person has B.O. on a cool, breezy day, it’s not about the bike. It’s about that person! Also, you’re likely to get MUCH closer to someone on the subway (unintentionally) as opposed to someone at work, exposure to whom can be controlled to some degree.

Let’s go beyond B.O…..the subway experience SUCKS. You’re captive to every nut job, freak, criminal, deviant with $2.25. Also, with a subway, YOU NEVER KNOW EXACTLY HOW LONG YOU WILL BE DOWN THERE!! You’re at the mercy of the MTA! With a bike, at least you can escape. The bike is also cheaper and more eco-friendly. IT’S NO comparison!!

I’d trade a bike ride to work for a subway ride to (hopefully) work AN NEE DAY!

  2. With a flat city like NY, with the exception of the bridges there’s no reason to bereak a sweat if you commute at a decently slow pace (as I do) . It’s no different than walking. Of course if you’re the typical Spandex Speeder, you’ll also Smell.

“Its just gross. No wonder everyone hates bikers.” Agreed. Many bikers are stupid. That’s why I say only when a large number of normal people use a bike as daily transport will we see a change.

  3. Again — How is biking any different than standing on the subway platform? I’m sopping wet after a summer commute on the subway… Do you bring a change of shirt for after the subway ride?

Sparfcile — “Driving in NYC is already so expensive and unpleasant that nobody does it unless there’s really no viable alternative.” That is LAUGHABLE.

  4. “How about the people who DON’T bike to work and reek of B.O.?!? Or the MULTITUDE of people on the subway with B.O.?!!? ”

Dealing with BO on the subway is presumably – only temporary and thus, somewhat tolerable. But if you sit within smelling distance to someone at the office for 8+ hours a day – day after day – that is an entirely different situation….And yes, I have also dealt with BO’ed co-workers who don’t bike to work.

  5. My other beef is with the bikers that bring their bikes into a crowded subway car, its like dude, you have a bike, is it just for show? Between the giant strollers and bikes there is sometimes no way to squeeze out of the car. Plus once I got dirt on my clothes from the tires of the bikes. Its just gross. No wonder everyone hates bikers. They are so inconsiderate of others.
