bike-lane-thumb-0610.jpgThe Brooklyn Paper is chock full of stories about bike lane conflict today. First up is more drama surrounding the new lanes on Prospect Park West. As you may recall, DOT’s decision to axe one lane of car traffic to make way for a two-way bike lane was done despite opposition by Marty Markowitz and many others in the driver camp. Now, it turns out, some pedestrians who are used to only having to look one way before crossing are up in arms. Meanwhile, down in Bay Ridge, Community Board 10 voted earlier this week against two new proposed bike lanes. “The city is bent on taking away driving lanes for cars,” said Allen Bortnick, a member of Community Board 10. “We are not going to be able to live with this comfortably.”

  1. 11217;

    I’m not the one judging folks by their “greeness”. I respect what you state above. You try to do what you can, but you don’t deprive yourself of pleasures that are important to you. For some folks, that pleasure might be a McMansion, driving to work, or gorging themselves at Applebee’s.

  2. I do the best I can, Benson. That’s all people can do. I don’t plan to become a hermit for the sake of being green. I don’t own a car and haven’t for a decade, I have small spaces which use very little energy and I reuse and recycle nearly everything. I’d like to do more, but I’m doing what I can.

    How do you stack up on the green front since you’re asking?

  3. Minard,

    I’m in my early 30’s, own two apartments…one in Park Slope and one in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

    I grew up very very middle class and achieved my bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees on full scholarship and have worked extremely hard to get to where I am now professionally. I’ve traveled to over 30 countries.

    You don’t know me. At all.

  4. “The Europeans are very nice in many ways and really rather awful in other ways. They are xenophobic and deep-down racist in a way that would shock you. They are also rather cold and very, very, snobby and materialistic.”

    I was nodding my head until I got to “materialistic”, then I shook my head. Realtive to the USA I mean.

  5. But what do we have to show for it Dave? More stuff?

    We have a society which is now approaching majority obese and our quality of life is falling.

    I’d take 6 weeks vacation, cleaner air and a sense of real community over the current plan. But I’m admittedly a bit of a hippie.

  6. 11217 you have the typical rich American youth disdain for America. How old are you? I assume in your twenties.
    People are people no matter where you try to go. The Europeans are very nice in many ways and really rather awful in other ways. They are xenophobic and deep-down racist in a way that would shock you. They are also rather cold and very, very, snobby and materialistic. You need to travel more and live in these places for more than a few days at a time to get a more realistic picture of things.
