The Brooklyn Paper is chock full of stories about bike lane conflict today. First up is more drama surrounding the new lanes on Prospect Park West. As you may recall, DOT’s decision to axe one lane of car traffic to make way for a two-way bike lane was done despite opposition by Marty Markowitz and many others in the driver camp. Now, it turns out, some pedestrians who are used to only having to look one way before crossing are up in arms. Meanwhile, down in Bay Ridge, Community Board 10 voted earlier this week against two new proposed bike lanes. “The city is bent on taking away driving lanes for cars,” said Allen Bortnick, a member of Community Board 10. “We are not going to be able to live with this comfortably.”
this politicization of bicycle riding is one of the most inane aspects of modern city living. The strident and aggressive lobbying groups such as transportation alternatives have fostered an atmosphere of hate and loathing.
I hope this idiocy dies down after daddy warbucks leaves city hall and people start thinking about serious matters again and stop fighting over green stripes painted on random streets.
Adults who ride around on bicycles on a daily basis are a tiny tiny minority. This isn’t Hanoi. And even in Hanoi, as soon as people make a little money they buy a motor scooter, with the eventual hope and dream of someday buying a real car.
Someone said it yesterday…this is in large part a generational thing.
Once the older generation dies off, we have lots to look forward to….less racism, less homophobia and more bike lanes.
The Bay Ridge proposal actually would NOT take away any lanes for cars or parking, so it’s bizarre that these people are so opposed to it — unless it’s just generic anti-cyclist prejudice. Bay Ridge would be a better place if its residents used bikes for short trips around the neighborhood rather than trying to drive everywhere.
A pedestrian always has the right of way over a cyclist. Let’s see how that works with many of these douchebags.
The Prospect Park bike lanes have flashing yellow lights at several intersections. According to NYS driver manual, flashing yellow means “Drive with caution”. Who has the right of way at these intersections, pedestrians or cyclist?
They were out painting the PP West lane green this morning.
this conflict is a nice distraction from the other bigger issues.

Must be something in the water down there…
I don’t think i want to keep up with this bullshit in another thread.
