The Brooklyn Paper is chock full of stories about bike lane conflict today. First up is more drama surrounding the new lanes on Prospect Park West. As you may recall, DOT’s decision to axe one lane of car traffic to make way for a two-way bike lane was done despite opposition by Marty Markowitz and many others in the driver camp. Now, it turns out, some pedestrians who are used to only having to look one way before crossing are up in arms. Meanwhile, down in Bay Ridge, Community Board 10 voted earlier this week against two new proposed bike lanes. “The city is bent on taking away driving lanes for cars,” said Allen Bortnick, a member of Community Board 10. “We are not going to be able to live with this comfortably.”
M4L,
It has to do with the amount of bikers per number of people who live in the city. You might see swarms of bikers in Hanoi or Beijing, but compared to the number of people who live there, they don’t make the top 10.
I agree with DH at 12:27 100%.
Shit, I don’t even care about bike lanes. Anyone who is on a bike in the city should be able to ride with or without a bike lane, and be able to choose a safe route to get where they’re going.
It’s just the OUTRAGE that drivers get whenever the issue is brought up. It’s clear automobile drivers have no desire to share the road with ANYONE, and it’s disheartening and scary that whenever I get on my bike I’m at the mercy of such self centered, irrational people.
I question that bike list above as far as apples-apples vs. Minard’s Hanoi reference. in hanoi, beijing,… I see swarms of bikes used as primary transport medium vs. the bike city list above is probably who has and uses a bike as part of the mix vs. bikes being the primary transport mode.
ALL bike lanes should be one way only.
And they should all be named “Matlock Expressway”, too.
Oh Dave don’t stir the pot even more!! 🙂

Rob, I’m pretty sure I’m younger than you are.
Although you would never know it by your comments on this website.
OH, SNAP.
This is like debating religion in the old days.
It only serves to foster hatred and intolerance.
I’m truly sorry I weighed in.
I can’t believe that Brownstoners still have it in them to discuss this. I thought we probably exhausted this yesterday.
“The Bay Ridge proposal actually would NOT take away any lanes for cars or parking, ”
I call bullshit. I’m orignally from southern Brooklyn, and still have many relatives and friends down there. Just last night I was down there talking to some friends, and folks are fuming about the high-handed way the DOT is trying to impose its agenda. I’ll cite just a few streets in Gravesend, my home turf, in which the number of lanes for cars has recently been reduced: West 6th Street from Ave P to Ave U; Ave P from Stillwell Ave to West 8th Street and Stillwell Ave from Kings Highway to 75th Street.
