The Brooklyn Paper is chock full of stories about bike lane conflict today. First up is more drama surrounding the new lanes on Prospect Park West. As you may recall, DOT’s decision to axe one lane of car traffic to make way for a two-way bike lane was done despite opposition by Marty Markowitz and many others in the driver camp. Now, it turns out, some pedestrians who are used to only having to look one way before crossing are up in arms. Meanwhile, down in Bay Ridge, Community Board 10 voted earlier this week against two new proposed bike lanes. “The city is bent on taking away driving lanes for cars,” said Allen Bortnick, a member of Community Board 10. “We are not going to be able to live with this comfortably.”
gagneur — 100% correct!
I would also like to add… pedestrians and bikers PAY just as much for the roads in this city as the driver. Non-drivers are subsidizing the roads. The shared social benefit being COMMERCE… not the “right” to commute to work in your SUV. Nor the “right” to drive your little kiddies around to play dates.
Monday through Friday, from 8:00 to 5:30 — I fully support a large tax on ALL vehicles that are not commercial vehicles or have a receipt to prove they bought something within an hour of their driving around.
Imagine how nice the roads would be?
p.s. When you think about it, what is truly snobbier than saying that an entire country of people are snobs? A country you’ve probably never been to, no less.
That is all.
I really would have liked a bike lane on bay ridge parkway – drivers are f*in crazy in bensonhurst and bay ridge and I have to ride through for work often although they fought freakin cell towers for like 5 years down there so what did I expect….
So in summation, if you like biking, traveling and care about the enviroment, you must be young, hate America, take “meds,” come from rich parents and have an STD.
Ahhh, the joys of Brownstoner.
I think a lot of the high emotion this issues generates is caused by fear. I know when I’m driving & see a biker doing stupid things I start feeling really anxious & that tends to express itself as anger at the cyclist for taking risks. It really is true that if cyclists would obey not just the law (which in itself would be good) but common sense, people wouldn’t get so negative about them. It’s a basic fight or flight reaction.
“Many people I know, including myself have had life changing experiences from visiting another country. ”
STD’s?
😉
Minard,
You sound like a very unhappy person. You disrespected me, and I told you the truth (which was nothing like what you were projecting about me) and you continue to be rude.
It’s very telling.
“For some folks, that pleasure might be a McMansion, driving to work, or gorging themselves at Applebee’s.”
Except that traveling opens ones eyes to the joys of the entire world and allows you the opportunity to gain an understanding of something outside yourself.
McMansions, Applebees and polluting the earth do nothing but satisfy your own selfish pleasures.
Not that I don’t have selfish things I do, but if more people traveled, they’d probably have a better understanding that to live a happy and fulfilled life, you don’t need to eat yourself to death, or live in a huge empty house with 3 cars parked in the garage.
I am a firm believer in travel. Many people I know, including myself have had life changing experiences from visiting another country.
11217 you OCD is showing.
I wrote “snobs” not “slobs”.
You better go take your meds.
really.
