On Sunday we finally found the time to visit two of Berlin’s best-known flea markets. The first was a smaller and better-curated flea market at Arkonaplatz, which is in Mitte or Prenzlauerberg, depending on who you ask. We also walked a few blocks north to the massive market in Mauerpark. This one offered rows upon rows of vendors selling everything from guitars to socks. Right next door in the park, there was a rock band playing in a stone amphitheater. Quite a scene.

  1. Funny DH. You know I loved Berlin when I went recently, but the lack of diversity is pretty much the primary reason why I’d never consider living there. Was offered a job there recently and thought about it, but there’s something about Berlin that feels cold and honestly I think it’s partially a product of that lack of diversity. As much fun as I had there, it really made me appreciate Brooklyn when I got back.

  2. Not to badmouth the Brooklyn Flea… but there’s really no comparison to “real” flea markets. The flea markets in other cities have the old treasures that 11217 speaks of. The Brooklyn Flea is more… well, full NYC retail prices on a playground. (With a *few* exceptions here and there.)

  3. You’re right about that, Mr. B!

Don’t get me wrong, love the Brooklyn Flea, but it’s become more about people watching and taking friends who visit from Manhattan and out of the city than actually finding old treasures for me.

I shouldn’t compare….the Mauerpark flea just rambles and rambles….there were moments where I was “lost” inside the maze of people and booths and just loved it.

  4. Looks like fun, and it’s good to know that dubious taste in home furnishings is not exclusive to the United States. Remnants of East Berlin’s Soviet bloc past, I hope. There is some interesting lighting in the background.
