The Sean Bell Community Center, established at 107-52 Sutphin Boulevard in memory of the Jamaica man killed in an police shooting, closed last Friday. Queens Chronicle reports that the center couldn’t get enough funding for programming — according to the New York Daily News, the center has struggled with funding since this summer. Police killed Bell in a shootout in 2006, a few hours before his wedding. His parents, William and Valerie, opened the center in 2011 and offered day programs for children, homework and reading help, and school programs. It was staffed by unpaid volunteers. Sadly, yesterday was the seventh anniversary of Bell’s death.
