Here’s some news for the large outdoor shopping center in Jackson Heights along 31st Avenue. Petco just signed a new, long-term lease for a 13,500-square-foot space in a stand-alone building within the shopping center. The Petco location is expected to open by the end of the year. And Santander Bank (formerly Sovereign Bank) signed a long-term extension, which includes a relocation within the shopping center. Santander Bank will move from the ground-floor location it has held for 20 years to the 4,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by Rainbow Shops.

According to Muss Development, responsible for handling both leases, a few upgrades are in store for the complex as well. The press release says this: “In an effort to strengthen the property and solidify the tenant base, additional upgrades are being made throughout the shopping center’s retail and office component including renovations to the property’s lobby entrances, signage, facade, and overall landscaping.” The redevelopment also includes a new space, built for a variety of uses, that will have its own dedicated entrance on 31st Avenue. The new space will be a total of about 18,500 square feet. The shopping center already holds a total of 24 retail stores and nine offices. UPDATE: We now have renderings of the updated shopping center, and you can see a few more images after the jump.

  1. I’ve always been surprised that the supermarket in that shopping center remained a Waldbaum’s. Over the years the chain closed every store that was in northwest Queens. I think the next closest is the one on 20th Ave in Whitestone. The chain seemed to move away from “working-class” neighborhoods, but left this store behind, perhaps as a reminder of an earlier time when the chain dominated northern Queens.

    • I’ve been wondering the same thing for years. I hardly go in there, but when i do the employees have been great. It’s a pretty big space and really the only supermarket in the area. The CVS on northern and 73rd used be a CTOWN but now the closest supermarket is on 83rd and Northern or perhaps the new market that opened up on 51st and Northern. Should this Walbaum’s close, that would be a really long way to get groceries for the people in that area.

  2. It’s great to finally hear that there will be improvements made to that mini-mall. Having lived in the neighborhood for over 30 years, it’s a welcomed change. Personally, that mall and the neighborhood at large would benefit tremendously if there was a Blink fitness ( or any gym at that level) and perhaps a modern take on a diner/casual restaurant. I’ll go even as far as saying a pizzeria uno’s. It’s a great location, geographically (close to LGA, and highways, and actually upper Manhattan) and it’s family friendly; plus a boon for big parties/events. That mall and the surrounding area is ripe for change and if there is an opportunity to engage with the development team or the owners, I’m sure there will be tons of feedback.
