twa-terminal

Negotiations between hotelier Andre Balazs and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to develop the Eero Saarinen-designed TWA Terminal at JFK Airport have fallen apart, reports Crain’s. There aren’t many details why, but here’s the statement issued by Andre Balazs’ company, which is known for developing Standard Hotels thorough the city:

Standard International was invited to enter into exclusive negotiations based on its unique plans and designs for the adaptive re-use of the legendary building. After more than two years of negotiations, Standard International has been unable to reach a final agreement with the Port Authority and announced today that it will no longer pursue the project.

The hotel plans, announced last fall, included a conference center, food and beverage outlets, retail space, a fitness center and a flight museum. The Port Authority has already entered discussions with a backup candidate selected from the request for proposal process to redevelop the historic, landmarked building. The Port Authority issued the RFP back in 2011. According to Crain’s, “Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and Trump International were reportedly interested in the project as well.”
