The Drip Man Cometh
Blog Ni9e identifies his favorite tag on the streets right now. Rumored to be the work of someone named KR, the drips are proliferating around the city, including this newspaper dispenser in Williamsburg and this mailbox. Drips… [Blog Ni9e via Kottke]

and neither does times square
punk rock and mom and pop stores have nothing whatsoever to do with this.
Man, New York has become the softest, most “picket-fencey” homogenous city in the U.S.! What the hell happened to you people? I remember when one LEFT the safety of the suburbs to embrace the magical chaos of the city – I was one of ’em. I LIKE graf and I liked Times Square, too. And the trains when they were mobile art galleries. And punk rock and Mom and Pop stores. Does ANYBODY remember NYC? If you want pristine mailboxes and hypermarts and drive-thru banking, there’s an ENTIRE CONTINENT out there waiting for you; just take a left at Manhattan. Jeez!
I’m the one who said I thought they were pretty and artful. Part of what I like about these “tags” is that they are on a mailbox and a free newspaper receptacle — ugly public stuff on our streets that could use a bit of livening up. These are appropriate locations for street art. I would not feel at all sanguine about this if these tags were on someone’s home or car or business establishment.
Brownstoner, I’m the one who made the comment re someone tagging your property. If I had to make a rule, it would be no tagging at all, though there are some tags/grafitti that I do like, like some of the neckface pictures, some of the stencils, and those lanky stick figure people. That being said, I have a real problem with ANY tagging that is done on commercial or residential property (i.e. anywhere other than a light pole or mailbox or overpass. People spend a lot of money to maintain property and to have taggers spray paint on your house or storefront and call it art is asking too much in my opinion. One tagger who I’d love to see throttled would be the “duane” tagger. He has been prolific in FG, Clinton H., even some parts of Manhattan…though lately I don’t see his tags as much, must have either grown up or gotten arrested.
i like it and see it as art
i don’t know where to draw the line- but i do see a difference between tagging your name and graffiti artists like “neckface” and all the really cool artistic expression i see around the city
may favorites are stencils. and the anti-bush commentary written (i think in chalk) in equally spaced neat letters, that I see around fort greene.
beauty aside this is destruction of property and ends up costing someone to erase it. this is the same thing as every tag you don’t like.
I also think they are beautiful.
Actually, we had our car tagged last year and we were none too pleased. Luckily, it only cost $25 to get it buffed out.
