Modern Facade for 574 Carroll
The Gowanus/Park Slope border of Carroll Street has become an interesting breeding ground for modern design. There’s 580 Caroll, if course, and the all-white residence at #461. There’s also 458 Carroll, which you can see after the jump. And this here is 574 Carroll, which looks like it recently got a new facade. It was…

There’s also 458 Carroll, which you can see after the jump. And this here is 574 Carroll, which looks like it recently got a new facade. It was originally a brick building, and the window configuration has been kept intact. Do you like? GMAP
Looks very nice to me.
I like the top building. You can see the old facade on Google maps – nothing special. Modern houses tend to be more asymmetrical so the metal panels next the windows work. The reddish hue of the wood also looks great – now. It will be interesting to see how it ages. If not well, it can just be painted. As for the bottom building – barf. That is my professional opinion.
I like that they’re trying someting but with the exception of 580 they look like one liners. I might like the bottom one if they did something better with the street level. The upper windows look like they’d be nice but chilly on the inside.
Saw it on Sesame Street the other day.
“Which of these buildings just doesn’t belong”?
Then Elmo shot the developers and some hipsters execution style!
It was the “Feel Good” episode of the year!
^^ haha – awesome ^^
RIDICULOUS. IN AN ATTEMPT TO BE DIFFRENT THEY THROUGH OUT ALL SENSE OF STYLE,
THIS LACKS IMAGINATION AND THE WOOD WILL AGE TO LOOK LIKE A MILK CRATE LEFT BY THE CURB. THE WOOD ALREADY LOST ITS COLOR IN SEVERAL SPOTS. WHAT IS WITH THE METAL PANELS I CAN ONLY ASK WHY??????? THE SECOND HOUSE LOOKS LIKE A MEDICAL BUILDING. WHY DONT PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE IN HOUSES THAT LOOK LIKE HOUSES????
PLEASE DESIGN HOUSES THAT LOOK HOMEY NOT HOMELY
JUST walked by this as they were finishing up the facade, and my 7 yo daughter commented on how nice it looks. It really does.
Love it! Good modern design like this is a shot of energy for otherwise drab, deteriorated 19th century streetscapes.
Carroll St is actually once of the nicer blocks to cross between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. It’s really the only block that spans the canal that remains pretty residential and tree lined all the way to 4th avenue.
