Talk about networking! A Bay Ridge resident emailed us to let us know about the Facebook page they started for 237 79th Street, a property that they say has been neglected for two decades. “There you’ll see photos of standing water, holes in the roof, a second floor that has collapsed into the ground, raccoons that inhabit this house, and bulging walls that show this house is ready fall at any moment.” Apparently Facebook has been more useful that the DOB: After residents spent years contacting various city agencies without getting anywhere, the Facebook page has sparked the attention of the Brooklyn Paper and News 12 Brooklyn. Hopefully that leads to some real action to take care of this place.

  1. “twin’s house was used as John Travolta’s house in Saturday Night Fever”

Awesome! I’m queuing that shit tonight! Or in-demanding it.

  2. Montrose, you are correct in saying this is a great house. Proof of that can be seen in this ugly house’s beautiful twin. You see, this house sits at the end of a row of limestones. On the opposite end sits an exact copy of this house, intact, restored, kept up, etc. Coincidently the beautiful twin’s house was used as John Travolta’s house in Saturday Night Fever. So if you want to see the real potential this home has pay a visit to 79th st or put SNF in your Netflix queue.

  3. Back to say, great house, too. I hope it can be saved.

Dave, I wouldn’t discount the power of publicity. It can’t hurt, in any case, and is at least proactive, instead of just accepting that the owner is not going to do anything, and accepting decreptitude in your neighborhood.

  4. I love it! This is a great idea. We may have to copy this for a couple of properties in Crown Heights, specifically the apartment building across from the Children’s museum, and the building on Kingston housing the old Kingston Lounge. Neighbors, CB8, the Crown Heights North Assoc, local block associations, you name it, have been after the city for years to get the owners to either secure and fix up, or sell.
