455 Union in Gowanus was in a pretty shabby state when it was a House of The Day a few years ago. Since then, it was purchased for $700,000 (ask: $950,000) and underwent a pretty extensive reno, which we’ve been checking on occasionally. And now it’s done. What do you think? 1. Ah, Minard, good eye. I completely didn’t notice the missing third window! Yes, the third window would have been nice, but I don’t think it brings down the overall good look of the place.

  2. “It is fine but a little ironic that after purchasing a house with a historic facade they chose to replace it with a faux-historic facade”

i believe that is what folks around here call “contextual”

  3. Yeah…. I’m not loving the faux-historic new facade either. It just seems that more could be done to rehab the existing facade… I do like the blue, but wouldn’t it have looked nice on the old dental molding? And wouldn’t the siding have looked better if they did it like the Russo Notary buildings instead?

    I guess I’m just a killjoy.

  4. I’d say they have two rooms on the top floor so had to replace 3 windows with 2. No reason to do that expensive redo otherwise. No point complaining about ‘historicity’, ML, it looks a lot better now (maybe except for the cornice)

  5. it looks like they rebuilt the facade from scratch.
It is fine but a little ironic that after purchasing a house with a historic facade they chose to replace it with a faux-historic facade. I guess they just could not live with the historic window pattern as it was.
