After selling in December for $1,075,000, work began recently at 31 Joralemon Street in Brooklyn Heights. Evidently, though, the extent of the work—namely the removal of a side wall—has raised some concerns with both the Department of Buildings and the FDNY. As the photo on the jump shows, representatives of both were on hand earlier today to check on the structural integrity of the situation and, presumably, to assess whether there’s a risk to passers-by or neighbors.   1. This project is under adult supervision so there is no need to worry. The FD guys are stationed around the corner and are probably more curious than anything else.
    The way this is done is that the entire house, from cellar to roof, is shored internally with temporary timbers. That allows everything to stay in place while the bearing wall is taken down and rebuilt. After the new wall is in place the shoring is removed and the house gets a new lease on life. The bow in the front will probably be stabilized with anchors that go in and attach to the floor joists.
    This happened because someone took the adjacent house down long ago. These early houses need one another to lean on.
