The owner of the gorgeous brownstone at 97 St. Marks Avenue in Prospect Heights continues to gun for a curb cut. A reader let us know the owner has “an appearance before the BSA on Tuesday, 3/15….looks like they are still trying to get the curb cut and garage approved, even though the area is now landmarked,” and a Board of Standards and Appeals employee confirmed that an appeal on the matter is calendared for that date. (The owner also has a separate appeal in to continue construction under prior zoning regs that hasn’t yet been calendared, according to the BSA.) This story is an old one: The application for a curb cut was originally filed shortly after the Prospect Heights landmarking in 2009 but the DOB slapped an SWO on it that still remains in place. Something tells us we haven’t heard the last of this one, unfortunately.

A Curb Cut on Landmarked St. Marks Avenue? Really? [Brownstoner]
Ugh. If I was this woman’s neighbor I’d be bribing the stoop pooper to pay a visit, or several.
this woman should sell something in the marketplace so she doesn’t get so much negative publicity on brownstoner.com
Yes, etson, apparently the Scrooge who inhabits this brownstone wants to demolish the lower level (and apparently kicked out the old owner of the building in order to do this) and create a garage which would in turn ruin the facade and basically alter the building in general.
If you buy a brownstone in the first place, why don’t you cherish it, especially a really grand one like this with a garden, and a mansard roof. I cringe at what the monster has done to the interior.
If the LPC somehow accepts this, I’ve lost complete faith in this city’s urban fabric to not only be a dense and transit-encouraging city, but a showplace of idiots.
This is a horrible idea. Hope the owner is rejected. It’s everyone’s business on the block (and in the neighborhood) because this sort of stuff affects their property values as well.
Also, front yard doesn’t look deep enough to fit a car in this case. Is the owner hoping to convert the garden floor to a garage?!
In fact I believe the zoning would not allow it and that would be paramount to the LPC.
Sorry, but the issue strikes at two of my most prominent views (historic architecture and transit) which got along just fine together before cars came along.
I’ve met some okay people from Ohio, but they mostly adopt New York living when they come here.
Blayze, you are being irrational and overly emotional. Its just a discussion about a garage. There is no need to offend everyone in Ohio. Many in that state would think of living in Brooklyn as cruel and unusual punishment.
No, it won’t be granted if this nutjob thinks she can get a whole new garage with a metal gate into the building. That destroys the facade which is the most illegal thing you can do to a landmark building. If she’s not paralyzed or in some dire straits, then no. Learn to walk like the rest of us and enjoy your neighborhood. Or go back to Ohio.
That and It’s a shame that this lazy person doesn’t even tend to their property.
OK,property rights. Let her park in her front yard. But…she is stuck there if a car parks on the PUBLIC street and blocks her in.
