The owner of the gorgeous brownstone at 97 St. Marks Avenue in Prospect Heights continues to gun for a curb cut. A reader let us know the owner has “an appearance before the BSA on Tuesday, 3/15….looks like they are still trying to get the curb cut and garage approved, even though the area is now landmarked,” and a Board of Standards and Appeals employee confirmed that an appeal on the matter is calendared for that date. (The owner also has a separate appeal in to continue construction under prior zoning regs that hasn’t yet been calendared, according to the BSA.) This story is an old one: The application for a curb cut was originally filed shortly after the Prospect Heights landmarking in 2009 but the DOB slapped an SWO on it that still remains in place. Something tells us we haven’t heard the last of this one, unfortunately.

A Curb Cut on Landmarked St. Marks Avenue? Really? [Brownstoner]
BSD,
We all make decisions. And BTW, you don’t have to be wealthy to afford a parking spot. Spots can be found for under $200 a month all over the place.
There’s a 2,3,4 stop right smack dab down the street. Those are solid lines. Why do you need a car in one of the most heavily trafficked areas of Brooklyn?
Deny it. Besides, curb cuts for brownstones are ugly. If Bloomie’s stupid PlaNYC was working, he’d deny all new curb cuts throughout the city unless it was some special situation, (i.e. handicapped or you’re way out in the Bronx or Queens)
if the city aproves this, good for the guy. who cares if his car is parked in his front yard? it’s his house, as long as the law aproves it let it be. move on from this topic already, jeez…
That makes perfect sense Blatant. Indeed only the wealthy should be able to drive in NYC, and those middleclass chumps who have to commute by car for their jobs should turn a 1hr commute into 3 (walk, subway, train) and increase their commuting costs…..or just get out to the suburbs and leave nyc for the rich.
Makes ton. If private transportation is more cost prohibitive, then more people use public transportation. Better for the environment, better for the city. Hong Kong is a great example. Owning a car at all is a complete luxury. As a result, they have much less congestion on their streets. You can pretty much zoom around in a taxi, even in rush hour.
“Good for him. The less street parking the better. It clogs the streets and gives people an excuse not to use public transportation. If you can’t afford a private garage or lot, don’t get a car in NYC!!!”
Sense, this makes none.
you don’t see why they would? well i guess that settles it.
There are plenty of brownstone houses that have existing curb cuts and they don’t seem to be an issue, so unless the DOB is requiring 40 ft just out of spite, I don’t see why they would.
Putting landmarks aside for a moment, doesn’t the DOB require a minimum 40 foot width to grant curb cuts?
