The hard work of the Park Slope Civic Council and others is paying off: On Friday, reports The Observer, the Landmarks Preservation Commission began the process of expanding the Park Slope Historic District by officially “calendaring” the revised boundaries; the move would expand the currently western boundary to the far side of 7th Avenue; currently it stops at 8th Avenue between 5th and 15th Streets and the eastern side of 7th Avenue between 5th and Union Streets. The expanded district would also include a couple of cut-outs that remain unprotected on Prospect Park West. If ultimately approved (which is highly likely) the number of protected buildings would grow from 2,000 to over 2,500. You can read the precise boundary definitions on the LPC website.

Ah. Good, MM. I can put one up on my house and do all kinds of nefarious things under its cover. How would LPC (or the neighbors) know?
Houston, we have a plan.
C’mon, cmu. A flag is not a permanent alteration to a building unless you paint it on the facade. The LPC has no jurisdiction over lawn ornaments, patriotic or otherwise.
“I’ve noticed a lot more American flags in PS recently, and even a Union Jack in Boerum Hill. ”
That’s weird – I thought liberals hated america.
I didn’t say you were insincere, Sparafucile, don’t put words, or intentions in my mouth.
“Live and let live” is easy to say in theory, a lot harder when it’s next door. If you don’t care, then you don’t care. Fine. But most people do care when a neighbor’s “improvements” are totally out of context and make their own house look bad for just being next door.
DH, there is demolition by neglect, which really pisses the LPC off. Not to mention the community. The LPC has sued, and won. Even if your building falls in ruin, any rebuild is going to have to meet LPC standards, and be contextual with its neighbors. And I’m sure if you are a building owner who willfully and over the course of years let your building fall down, and then you come to the community board, and finally the LPC with shiny new plans, you better have a thick skin, a long timetable, a fat wallet, and a damn good architect.
They would object to it being American Only unless it was made in China, supports a Chinese job overseas that was generated by the Stimulus! Then it gets a waiver by our comrade friends!

At first I thought it was for 4th July but they are still up. Good stuff.
What if one puts a huge American flag say 12′ x 20′ in front of ones house? Would LPC object?
DH, Assume it would not prevent the first part (neglect) but would prevent the second (tear down & build whatever they want).
Montrose, you don’t know me, and you have absolutely no basis on which to accuse me of insincerity. It so happens that a neighbor down the block did just redo his house with vinyl And I think it’s ugly, but I’m not so full of myself to think it’s my place to dictate how he maintains his property. And I’m not enough of a busybody to launch a crusade against it. He’s not opening a nightclub, or building a 20-story apartment building, or doing anything that could actually affect his neighbors.
It seems that the concept of ‘live and let live’ is alien to a lot of people on this board.
