Matching Original Moldings?

I have a couple missing sections of wainscoting which I want to replicate and replace. I got a quote from my carpenter which I typically use (and trust), but the price is pretty high. He says all the cost comes from having to make custom knives to replicate the moldings exactly. So my question is: are there any local millwork shops which might already have these knives made and can produce the moldings more cheaply? My understanding is that a lot of brownstones were spec houses, and the moldings came out of a catalog; and therefore many of the local houses might have used the same ones. Alternatively, are there any well-known online sites where I might match the molding profiles? Or is getting it done custom the only way to get a good match?

We had some window frames made by gala when we were restoring our stained-glass windows, so they’d match the ones we were able to keep. At the time, we showed Joseph some of our wainscoting that looks like it has fire damage and needs to be replaced and they do that kind of work. Depending on what wainscoting you have, you’re unlikely to find an exact match off the shelf, but it’s worth a look. We had some knives made for bead board and moldings, and the price was something like $250-$375 for each one, depending on the size. The harder part was finding someone with the patience and the right equipment to mill it by hand for us.

We often find good matches at sawmouldings.com. Their profiles tend to be a bit finer than dykes. They also do custom knives relatively inexpensively.
