Skylight Shade???

We installed a Mechano Shade on our 6×6 skylight with the remote control, and a 5% shade.  It has made a tremendous difference in the heat during the summer.  The remote works well and is not particularly noisy.  You will have three cables running across the skylight:  two thin steel cables on the side and a plastic support one through the middle.  They are thin enough that they become unnoticeable.  We used Bright Home Theater in Manhattan and were satisfied with the work.  It was part of a larger job so I can’t split out the cost of the one skylight.

We have a very large skylight (8′ x 8′) that is overdue for some kind of shade. I’m having difficulty finding a solution for our dimensions. Please help with and recommendations for materials, brands or professionals who might be up for the challenge.

The dimensions of your skylight is not a common. Your best course of action is to have a custom shade made and installed. Price range is truly going to limit your options. As an Automated Lutron Shade installer, we will give you a free estimate with a full cost break down. If you choose to go with a less expensive route, I know of some shade dealers/installers that are not exclusive to Lutron. The only downfall to their products is that the motors are rather loud and everyone will be able to hear the shade closing.

We’re installing a Mechano Shade on an 8×8 skylight as part of a reno.  It won’t be installed for a few more weeks so I can’t give you an informed recommendation on it or the installer, but our research on shade companies led us to choose this product.  It will be a single sheet of 3% opacity fabric, and the control is via a remote.  We ran power to the skylight, which was easy as this is a loft where all the mechanicals are exposed.
