All about skylights
Now I am planning to add skylights to flat roof of newly built extended room, living room (16×20). I would like to have opinions from your experience. There is no sun light coming from windows in the living room, so having more natural light is the main purpose. However I don’t want to have draft or leak or any problems associated with skylight.
1\. How to decide location and size – bigger is better? a couple of small skylights vs one big one
2\. Skylight brand and quality ( wasco, velux, low-e coating window etc) which is more insulated and durable
3\. Open or fix skylight, any pros and cons
4\. Temperature in winter time
5\. How to finish – I like simple and contemporary
6\. Which shade is the best?
7\. Over all satisfaction on skylight
Please give me your opinions, Thank you in advance.

Velux is a good choice. The insulation is better than any regular double hung, because it closes surface to surface. There is no difference in insulation values between the tilt amd the closed versions. WInter is no problem, you should consider some shades for summer when the sun is burning down.
You could also consider Light Tubes, but I have no experience with those. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_tube

Please find out the name of brand! How about heat so far this summer? I have many questions,,, Do you have shade? And side walls of skylight are dropping straight down ? Ideally I want to do in this month. Thank you!

We put a skylight into the roof of our addition. It’s 4 X 4, doesn’t open, haven’t had any problems with leaks, is not a standard skylight — very plain, very expensive, worth it, gives beautiful light, not cold in winter. I can find out from my architect the name of the company — had to be ordered considerable time in advance.
